Anyone running this combination? I'd love to hear what load(s) give great accuracy.

Thanks,

efw

Eric,

I would think that IMR7828 would be a great powder in the 257 Wby.

On your way to the majic 7828 load, give H1000 and Fed. 215 mag primers a try. My Wby .257 produces -1/2" groups with it. The 110AB is my favorite bullet in the .257, although the 100BT is a close 2nd.

I am just waiting for some better weather. I have a .257 Roberts which I have never shot. I have ordered some 110 gr AB's for it and will start working on loads for it pretty soon. My feeeling is, based on other similar calibers, that the IMR 7828 SSC may end up as the load, of the month for this cartridge!

RL22 has been magical in my rifle but I'm out. I have about a full lb of 7828 and a bunch of 110 ABs to try out. As Jim pointed out and according to the Hodgdon manual this is the top performer for the cartridge, but I can't find info on this particular bullet anywhere.

As for the same bullet in a standard Bob, based upon my experience w/ the Better Bob I'd say 7828'll be too slow for top velocities... I'd try a 4350 & H4831SC... maybe even RS-Hunter & Magnum, since their load densities are so vastly superior to sticks. In my Better Bob I got great velocities and ok accuracy from H4831SC, but best all around package came w/ IMR-4350.

Thanks all... if anyone has specifics on a good start I'd be grateful,

Eric,

Start with load data for a 115 gr bullet and work up from there.

I have Hodgdon and IMR powder on hand. I will start with that. I am curious to find the crossover with this caliber where loads max out and the next increment starts diminishing returns on the chrono. Everybody has always wimped on this cartridge and never stretched it a little. There is no reason that it can't run at 55-60K CUP as well except because of predjudice against it. Same as the .280 Remington. I think that IMR 7828 SSC will prove me out.

Bought my 257 Weatherby magnum in a Weatherby Accumark half a year ago. Just had first hunting season with it for white-tail as thats all i was drawn for this year. I used to shoot a 7mm Remington Magnum with 160gr Nosler Accubonds which was a deadly combination. Shooting this 257 weatherby magnum leads be to believe to never touch that 7mm Rem mag on deer again. There is no explenation to how flat this thing shoots, and hits with extreme authority. Cranked my doe at laser range found 670 yards, doe did not know what hit it and fell in tracks. I use Bushnell Ellite 6500 4.5-30x50 with DOA 600. I am dead on at three hundred yards and at 670 yards i put second DOA bar on him allowed for wind very slightly and squeezed, Not much drop at at all. We have extreme Badger problems where my farm is and all i can say this Cartridge drops them in there tracks as well, i shot on in the saskatchewan heart shot as it was running away from me and actually flipped the badger end over tea kettle, not many cartridges can do this. Many coyotes fell to this combination as well at distances i have never shot before. All this performance is from IMR 7828 not the ssc. and A 110 Nosler AccuBond. I worked up a load for My rifle with brand new Norma brass, federal 215 mag primers, and 110 Accubonds. Noslers Reloading manual shows 71 gr as max, workin up to 71.3 grs of 7828 was 3/4 inch groups with a ammazing chrony velocity average of over 3600 Fps cant remember correct but think it was around 3630. At 3600 fps this combo has a calculated 3165 ft/lbs of kinetic energy  !!! this was over 200 fps faster than factory rounds and figured may be on warm side, even though no signs were shown, i dropped down to 70.5 grs, accuracy was touch better, and velocity was average 3550 fps if memory serves me right. Kinetic energy was still 3077 Ft/lbs of energy, shot to shot uniformity was very low with some shots shooting out the exact same velocity. All and all was very happy with this combo, and am already excited for next years hunt with the .257 bee, as i should be drawn for muley. I will have to work up another load as i shot off all fifty loaded rounds and runnning them through the Rcbs Full length size dies opens brass internal capacity of a two full grains more capacity, i want the same performance as this year ,next year .

Ty thanks that is just the info I was looking for!

OT3- I agree with you on your assessment of the 257 Bob. I have found it very helpful emailing Johan at Ramshot about that cartridge in particular, because he will send out info on loads at different pressure levels depending upon your preference/action.

69.0 Grians of 7828 w/ 110gr AB's gave me 3478fps and slighly over half inch groups out of my Rem 700 SPS.
I then had to go and put a laminated stock on it and bed it, which threw that load right out the window. I'm now using 115gr BT's & RL-25.

Another powder to look at that I had good luck with was N-165 It's not a go fast powder, but has always been accurate in about anything I shoot it in.

Good luck and let us know ........

This case, the 7mm Mauser, has about 3 grain of water capacity on the T52 (.308 Winc) case. I just cannot for the life of me figure out why it is lagging behind, the 7 Mauser, 6.5-08, .250-08 and .243. The Colonels poisoned all of our minds against these cases to promote theirs their entire lives. Shame on you dead guys.
