Guys, I was goofing around a little yesterday morning, checking over some Quickload data, and wanted to see if there was anything else I haven't really looked at for the 7mm Mauser. I have a bunch of 140 AB's and and have run them with RL19, which netted around 2750 with a near max load. While pretty decent, I thought there was more to be had. Well, I looked at my bench and realized I had a partial pound of RL17 on the bench. I bought it for use in my old 25-06 and to try it out in a few others. Nothing really ever popped, so it has sat on the bench.

Here was the profile I ran.

Cartridge : 7 x 57 mm Mauser (SAAMI)
Bullet : .284, 140, Nosler AccuBond 59992
Useable Case Capaci: 53.992 grain H2O = 3.506 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.180 inch = 80.77 mm
Barrel Length : 22.0 inch = 558.8 mm

Seeing 2900's with the 7mm seems like a stretch, but I figured I would give it a try.

So I loaded up a series of 4 load sets, 47, 48, 49 and 50 grains with Winchester brass, CCIBR2's and 140 AB's loaded to 3.160" which is about .020" off the rifling in this rifle.

47 grains (2742, 2784, 2735, 2733)

48 grains (2804, 2811, 2818, 2774)

49 grains (2848, 2870, 2863, 2857)

50 grains (2959, 2937, 2915, 2937)

Again, these were all shot at 138 yards, still haven't made my target stands yet, or really fixed up my little range yet, but for now, I think I am okay.

I am pretty sure I will be able to close in the groups with some seating depth adjustment, as the 140 BT's shoot much better in this rifle, seated deeper as well, but the speeds I was getting way pretty awesome. Really makes that 7mm Mauser a player in my mind. I have always liked the cartridge alot, but man, this gives it a real shot in the arm.

It is a trim and light hunting rifle, with very light recoil. Alot to like about the little feller! After seeing how well this rifle does, it really gets me juiced to get one of my own SC made 7mm Mausers....

The 7 Mauser is an excellent cartridge and is sadly underrated by many shooters. I suspect they are unfamiliar with the sweet seven, or they are suffering from magnumitis. As an aside, I have frequently witnessed some serious misspellings of the Mauser in postings on some sites. My favourite is the fellow that continually talked about wanting a 7mm Mouser. I giggled uncontrollably at the thought of either such a small rifle or at the vision of such massive rodents. Heck, I'd even like to find a 7mm Mouser. Alas, they seem to be fairly rare.

I would suggest due caution trying to tweak another 100-150 fps out of the 7mm Mauser case. The cartridge is what it is and that has been quite good enough in the game fields for over a century. :)

Noted, thank you for the heads up DCD.. I guess my thoughts are the 6mm Rem is the same case, as is the 257 Roberts. I will try to take some pictures of the cases, and primers, but I can see no signs of running it hard, and 60K isn't especially tough on brass that I can tell.

I did order up some Norma cases for the rifle, as Winchester stuff is pretty hard to get and there was a decent sale at Sinclairs for them.

You are right though, the extra 100-150FPS isn't needed everywhere, and keeping them at 2750 would have been fine as well, but I wanted a little extra if it was there for my son if he is going to hunt elk with the rifle. It pushes the energy up a little more, and flattens out the trajectory a touch. Energy being the priority.

I will keep working with the rifle and report anything and everything I get out of it. I will be happy to be in the mid 2800's to low 2900's though.

That long neck and long mag box really do give the 7mm Mouser (HA) the ability to run pretty well.

GREAT looking rifle Scotty, and what a classic in 7mm.

That's an excellent all-around rifle right there...

In a modern rifle I have loaded it to 62K psi with no issues. Remember they do NOT make weaker brass on purpose for the 7mm mauser.

Hey buddy. Good to hear from you. Yeah, your thoughts on the brass are my own as well. Not trying to smoke brass either, I am too cheap, and like to get as many loads as I can out of the brass, while still utilizing it for what it is.

Headed down stairs to load up some varying seating depths. Pretty excited to see what it does with that.

I have one of those rifles and I love it. I also have a Ruger #1A and a custom Mauser in 7x57.
I was looking at this portion of the data you posted:

Hodgdon H414 99.5 52.4 3.39 2985 98.2 63000 11606 1.039 ! Near Maximum !
Winchester 760 99.5 52.4 3.39 2985 98.2 63000 11606 1.039 ! Near Maximum !

I've been working with W760 and the 140 gr. Ballistic tips and at 49.0 gr. of that powder I get 2800 FPS and some small change but at 50 gr. the load is way too hot for the M70.
It is OK in the #1 but will lock up the bolt in the Mauser. :( One thing is when I do load work ups, I do them in the summer and around he that can mean 110 in the shade and there ain't any shade. I'll be watching your resluts with great interest.

Paul, 760 or 414 was going to next or might still be next, as it looks pretty good as well. I will for sure keep you posted on how it goes. I found no signs of overpressure at all. Primers were in great shape and everything looked like it was supposed to.

I just finished in the loading room and loaded from 3.160 down to 3.10". Hope to find a node the 140 AB likes in that range. I have high hopes for it.

Agreed Fotis, and it is indeed underrated!
Oh yeah,,,very beautiful rifle there Scotty. I'm in envy!

Scotty, very super looking rifle. Your son should be proud of that one! He should be able to take most American game with it for all of his life and pass it one to his kids, as I am doing now.

Very nice rifle. Keep us posted. I'm interested to see where you end up.

Any idea what she could run a 175 Partition up to? Seems with that long neck, a long bullet could be both nostalgiac and effective...

I think 2400-2500 would be pretty much in the ballpark with the rifle. I ran some old factory Remington 175 grain RN's through the chrono when I first got the rifle and they went across the screens at about 2350. I am pretty sure those could be amped up a little without pushing on it to hard.

Back in 1973, I bought a pretty little sporter based on an 1893 Mauser in 7x57. The only ammo in the little cow town I was living in at the time was the Federal 175 gr. round nose. Shot very well in that little rifle that looked very much like a Rigby sporter. Light, and very accurate. Opening day I was out bright and early abd by 8 AM i got a shot and a nice eating size Mule Deer. At the shot the deer took off and after I looked for about an hour, drove the 5 miles home to get my eagle eyed wife to help me look for the deer. We looked until the sun went down and never did find it.
Fast forward to a few years back. I'd just bought my Winchester M70 Featherweight and still had some of that ammo left. I went to the local gun shop and bought two more boxes so I could compare that old 1973 mmo against what the fresh would do. The old ammo did a whole 2000 FPS and so did the new ammo. Some time after that John Barsness made a comment on 24 Hour campfire as I recall, might have also been in a magazine article too that when he ran some Federal 175 gr. RN ammo over the chronograph, velocity was nowhere near advertised. I pulled a coulpe of bullets one from the old ammo and one from the new and the jackets were very thick. Thinking back on that hunt that tough 175 gr. bullet probably acted more like a solid on the deer and just penciled on through.
I did go back out the next day to see if I could find that deer and did by the birds. It had traveled well over 100 yards before expiring and sad to say the coyotes did not leave much.
I have only lost two deer in over 50 years of hunting and both deer were shot with the 7x57. I can't blame the cartidges for lost deer #2. s I was climbing up the hill to where I last saw the deer, my right foot turned one way and my body turned another way and bingo, tore the cartilige out of my right knee. That was 8 years ago and I still walk with a limp. My ex-son in law and his son were on that hunt and were more concerned about carrying my fat butt off the hill than finding my deer. :x It's kind of curtailed how I hunt anymore. The really rugged places are pretty much off limits now. :( No matter, I do like my 7x57s, all three of them.

So, I was just goofing around a little, and I looked up the BC on the new 150 ABLR. They advertise it as a .611, which is pretty danged high for a 150. I then ran a QL profile using a Sierra MK and Nosler 150 BT's. Both of those look to easily get into the mid 2800's with a few powders.. So I ran the numbers through the Hornady Ballistic's calculator, with the .611 BC..

I ended up with 1484 Ftlbs of energy retained at 525 yards, and a remaining speed of 2111FPS at 525. That is a whole lotta zip from that little case. Seems there is something to these bullets and from what I see of the 210's they look like they should be excellent bullets for big game. Either way, I am looking forward to giving them a whirl in the little 7mm. All you with the 280's and larger are going to have a blast with them.

Sorry for the long post on this, but carrying that little 7mm Mauser around is a pure joy, and I wished it were mine! My son scowls at me when he see's me sneaking it off to the range. Might have to get one of my own! HA!

Good showing Scotty. Yep, I'd say your boy has himself an elk rifle.

We'll expect pictures when you do!

Scotty, you are making me wish that I had gotten my dad's 7mm Mauser but I do have a .257 Roberts which is the Mauser case and does most of what I need it to do certainly.
