7mm Rem Mag Advice

Up date. Today 41 F rain and very foggy. Load 160 AB with 69.5 gr retumbo does not work. About 2800 FPS average and it shows accuracy issues.
Probably the powder is too slow. Again 168 VLD with 73 gr retumbo works again. Today about 3000 FPS accurate. Slower than colder weather? But the rain could cost harder reading for my chrono.
About 160 AB and RL 22, with some extra charge ... but I can get to 2870 FPS average.
Interesting ... 160AB show good accuracy. It looks that my 9.5 twist likes 160 AB. Almost any load with RL-22 is accurate, but I wnat more speed from it. Again the goal is 3000 or 3050 FPS.
I plan to try more loads with Rl -22 and some finally with Norma MRP next week.

RL 22 works very well in the 7mm Rem Mag. Might be worth trying a different lot number.
RL 22 has worked extremely well for me in my 280 AI and 338 RUM with the 200-210 gr bullets.
I need to give MRP a try in the 280 AI.

In addition, at the SHOT Show I spoke with the guys from Western Powders regarding the MRP. It will be available in the next couple of months, and they said it would be in sufficient quantities. We will have to see if that is true, but it sounds like they went through a lot of work to get it back here in the US.

Much as I like the 7mm Rem mag - I cannot figure out this low velocity problem Vodekzz is having. I was/am a staunch believer in RL-22 and the 160/168/175 gr bullets from the 7mm Rem mag. Have had great results from it in several different rifles. About 3,000 - 3,100 fps is more or less normal for me and the 160 gr bullets.
Vodekzz - with results like you and JD338 are getting from your .280 AI rifles, I wouldn't even bother with another 7mm of any flavor. Seriously. A 160 at 2900+ fps is serious medicine for anything short of the great bears I'd think. Using a 7mm Rem mag, I poked a 175 gr Nosler Partition at 2930 fps mv right through a big ol' bull elk some years ago. No problem. Well, not for me. For him, it was his last problem. Very lethal. Am certain I could do the same with a .280 AI and a 160 Partition at similar velocity.
Time to sell the 7mm mag and concentrate on using the .280 AI instead? It's virtually the same thing in the field.

Guy Miner, the purpose of 7mm is to get 160 AB up to 3000 FPS and heavier bullets.
168 VLD does very well, do not forget that Nosler has 168 AB LR coming!
I loaded some MRP start at 63 gr. This week I wil test it.
Another trick is to try old school Partition in 160 gr flavor.
Norma manual calls ro 63 gr maxx but some wrote as high as 66 gr?
Anybody has a load charge recomendation for 160 AB?

I was getting 3000 fps with a standard (not AI) .280 and IMR 7828 (58.0 grain and Fed 215 primer) with the 160 AccuBond.

Also try RL25 68-71 gr
I have been loading for the 7mm mag for a number of years now and we have used IMR4350 both rifles have 26" tubes and they are averaging between 2975fps & 3050fps.
The charge is 60grs. does not show excessive pressure but still work up to that. Maybe start at 58.5gr & go up.

Dan, I have used that same load (60.0 grs 4350 with 160 Partition ) in my 7mm Rem Mag and it was very accurate but not as fast as IMR 7828 SSC.

Is it possible it is just a slow barrel. I have loaded for several 30-06 and was getting around 3000 fps with two of those and 165 AB but in a third one I had could not get the very same load to touch 2800 fps.

Could be a slow barrel. It is a shame to load 66.0 of IMR 7828 just to equal 58.0 grains of the same powder in the .280 Rem. Makes one wonder about the law of diminishing returns?
Friend is leaving for Africa on April 2, asked if I would load up for his 7mm Rem. Mag. Used rem. brass, Fed. GM Match 215Mag. primer, H1000 & 160 AccuBond. Gun is a Tikka with detachable box magazine. Did I get a surprise! Ran two 3 shot groups at 100 yds. & both were under a half inch & one was .397". Velocity averaged 2840 ft./sec. Unfortunately the barrel length is only 22 in., but what a tack driver! He is a happy camper. :grin:

Wow that is a great accurate load. Not to surprised with the velocity though. Tell your friend good luck in Africa. That would be a fun trip some day.
