I have a lead on a SPS 7mm RUM for around $450. Is this a good price?

Is this cal a real pain to load for? POP mentioned in another topic to forget about 140gn bullets as he had no luck getting them to work. I was thinking of the 150ET then try 160AB if the ET didn't work.

What are your opinions. :)

............New or used? If used, ask yourself why someone traded it. If new, it is a very good price!

However, for reasons that Pop mentioned and other reasons, I myself am leary of over-bored cartridges when it comes to being tempermental to reload for. That extra speed comes with a price. Also, I`d consider barrel life as part of the equation as well.

Even though the #`s are better, for any realistic hunting purpose that a 7mm can be used for, to contend that a 7RUM can do that a 7 Rem Mag cannot do, is ridiculous.

New SPS rifle. I already have the 300 and 338 RUMs and was looking to get a 7MM RUM. I guess I'm just kind of infatuated with the ultra mags.

As far as the loads go I have had no problems with 140 or 160 A/Bs. They are very accurate and faasssttt. I don't know about e-tips. Sounds like a great price if it's in good shape. I've purchased several used guns in the process of replacing the old cheap ones. The prices were real good with recoil being the reason for the sale. They usually have less than a box of ammo put thrue them. This may not be the case in this case. It was sure an excellent all purpose caliber for me in Wyoming.

Rich,

You NEED the 7mm RUM to round out your RUM collection.

I think the 150 gr E-Tip would be an excellent choice for the 7mm RUM. If you are outside of the lead free zone, the 160 gr AB would be tough to beat. With a BC of .531, it will out run and hit harder than a 140 gr bullet. Push the 160 gr AB at 3300 fps and the 7mm RUM will make an awesome long range flat liner. Either bullet would cover everything from antelope ,caribou, deer, elk and moose.

Price is great! I am not particularly fond of the caliber because of its lack of versatility with bullets other than 160-175 grain.

Again some will remember that I had 2 sets of twins way back
One set was 7mm rum in Sako 75 and 300 rum in Sako 75 both SS/synthetic.
The second set was 7mm rum sendero and 300 Rum sendero ss.

BTW I had 2 sets of the sakos (yes I am a nut) at 2 years apart.

Long story short... I got 3200-3306 fps with the 7mm rum---160 AccuBond (pending on rifle)

and 3150-3180 fps with 200 AB in the 300 rums. All 3 times with the 3 sets!

Any attempts to specialize the 7mm rum for long range goats
(ie 140 Accubonds at 3600 fps----yeah I know 175 Matchkings
eck15.gif
at 3150 would be better at long range......
eck32.gif
) never ever worked out Every 140 gr spiked pressures at 3450 fps.

So I never saw the diff between 160's at 3200-3300 or 200 gr Abs at 3100-3200. Redundancy galore for me!!!!

But to which his own.

...............Since you already have a 300 RUM, imho, what`s the 7 RUM realistically going to do better? Too close together!

Since you have an infactuation for the RUM`s, get a 375 RUM for some real shoulder stimulatin fun!......

Well, after tossing this around for a while, I bit the bullet so to speak.

A Rem 700 SPS 7MM RUM will join my collection.

I'm probably going to sell a few of the other rifles that have become safe queens, such as my NEF Handi-rifle in 223 which includes a 243 barrel.

You won't be sorry. There is a difference between the 7mm and the larger calibers. I don't need a muzzle break on the 7mm. It is the ultimate midrange caliber in trajectory and FPE. I was amazed that the 300 Wby with a 180 gr. bullet had only a couple hundred foot pounds advantage. My 140 gr. A/Bs hit at the same point as the 160 gr. A/Bs at 300 yds. which is my zero. That gave me an antelope/deer/elk rifle. It took me a while to warm up to 7mm but now I'm a believer. If you'd like my loading data I'd be happy to share.

The 300 and 338 RUM's may be OK...but the 7mm RUM is possibly the least "ballistically efficient" round that has been developed in the last few years...a bad move on Remington's part in my opinion.

If you want a nice 7mm to add to your collection...get a 7mm STW.

Cool...and congrats! Please give us a range report! Here is something to get you started.

I also have a VX-III 4.5-14X40 coming for this. I put the LR version of this scope on my 338RUM and liked it so well, I decided to put the non-LR version on this rifle - couldn't afford another LR.

Rich,

Congratulations. With that scope, you have a great combo for just about any hunting situation in NA. Excellent choice for sure.

These are the loads that worked for me:
140gr. AccuBond
94 grs. Reloader 25 CCI 250 primers
Case length 2.85 " OAL 3.6"
3470 fps. 3869 fpe.
300 yd Zero +2.7"@ 200 yds -7" at 400 yds. 1st mildot -7" at 500 yds.

160 gr. AccuBond
90 gr. Reloader 25 Fed 215 primers
Case length 2.85" Oal 3.6"
3333 fps. 3808 fpe.
300 yd. Zero Within 2" of 140 gr. A/Bs

The 7mm RUM has become my go to gun for everything up to elk. I still like my 338 and 375 RUM's for them. By the way, these are very accurate in my rifle.
The 7MM RUM is King of the mid-bores!! There's no reason to settle for less!!!
Good Hunting

Well, according to big brown's tracking, my X-mas present will be here (my FFL) on Wednesday. I then have to wait another 10  days before I can take it home  , stupid CA wat period. :x

Rich,

Congrats! Post some pictures of your RUM under the X-Mas tree.
