What remington 700 action do I need for a 7mm WSM build?? A short action, long action or is there a short action magnum due to the size of the bolt face on the short mag??

Also do they come with the floor plate and follower?

Reason im asking is the barrel maker/gunsmith that's sorta close to me I wanna use is that I hafta supply the action. Soo I wanna get the action, a timney trigger, stock, so I can just basically go there pick out what contour and twist I want and hand them the rest of the parts and have it all done..

The 7 WSM shoulder was pushed forward just a touch so that someone would not be able to jam one into a 270 wsm. Still fits the short action though.

ok THANK you 26NosFan,

Does the action come with the magazine box, follower and floor plate?

Best bet is to buy a used donor rifle that is already barreled for any of the WSM cartridges. That way the bolt face, rails, etc are already proper for the 7 WSM.
BTW - 7 WSM brass hasn't been available in a few years and you can't simply neck down 300 WSM as some shooters believe. However, if you chamber your new barrel for 7-300WSM then you can simply neck down readily available 300 WSM brass.

Sooo would a .280 ACK IMP be a better option?? A 7mm WSM isn't set in stone. I just want a .284 of some sorts, but don't want a rem mag or a RUM.. Ive had a RUM and a .280 rem already and just wanted something different...

There is nothing wrong with the 7WSM. I own a custom built 7WSM and shoot & hunt with it often. I just thought I'd mention the brass issue which "could" be a game changer for some. The 280AI is a great cartridge but would require a different action then the WSM's. And... there is always the RSAUM.

Starting new - I really like the 7-300WSM and plan to rebarrel my rifle for it when the 7WSM is shot out. I've got over 1,000 rds through it at the moment but it still shoots great.

They don't have a reamer for that.. That was the first cartridge I looked for... lol

Yep, Scott's dead on.
Around $150 and a call to PTG and you own a 28 Nosler reamer. Or a 338 Nosler, or a 35 Nosler or......

Sorry, just having fun.

As to the action size, I would NEVER do a 7mm WSM on a 2.8 Rem SA but would do one on the M70 or similar 3.1 mag length. A 7mm WSM on a 2.8" action would be cramped with sleek 160's. The bolt face is a standard .532 since its rebated like the parent rounds.

I have messed around some with applying a false shoulder to a 300 WSM and fireforming. It worked for me but I do have enough brass to last awhile. It is tough stuff anyway, unless your really hammering it and not annealing you'd be hard pressed to wear it out.

Great cartridge though. Had mine for a few years in a Model 70 and it's a slick hunting rifle. Easy for me to work up loads as well.

Also, there are plenty of 7mm Rem Mags just waiting on a chance to let their inner 7mm Mashburn Super Magnum OUT!

Yeah buddy! Just need to find a suitable (SS M70) donor action for a Mashburn....

G'Day fella's,

Jezzolo, to the best of my knowledge on this cartridge, it was designed to fit and feed thru the slightly longer Win M-70 short action magazine.
But http://www.wyattsoutdoor.com also make two lengths of after market replacement magazine boxes, to suit the Rem 7 and Rem 700 rifles.
These do require a competent person with a Milling machine, to install/fit them to your rifle action and stock!
These will allow you to seat the bullets out to a slightly longer cartridge OAL, which can be handy if you reload!!!

Hope that helps

Doh!

As much as I love my .300WSM, if I had the hankering for a 7mm I'd go straight for the .280AI and never look back.

Lots of advantages to the .280AI- readily available ammo (both AI and .280REM can be shot in the AI chamber), available components, much easier action work and easy actions to find.... Heck, find a .280REM you like and run the AI reamer down it....easy.

Performance, they are so close no critter alive could tell the difference.

If it weren't for brass availability issues, I'd love to do a tacticool 7 WSM build on a Defiance action, DBM, heavy barrel, NF scope, with a purple camo or McSwirley A3 or A5 stock... I suppose I could build a 7-300 WSM or a 7 SAUM, but most likely if I took the plunge it would be a 6.5x47 Lapua...

jezzolo the 28 Nosler is Long Action. Whole idea was to fit it in standard .30-06 length actions. COAL is spec 3.340"
