7x57, good article in Guns magazine

I've always enjoyed the little 7 Mauser. The one I have now promises to be an excellent rifle in the field. I haven't taken anything with it yet as it is still somewhat new; however, I anticipate taking game with it this year. Great little cartridge, and Barsness did justice to his overview of the cartridge. I worked up a load for a fellow shooting a 7X57 who takes a moose each year. He had been using a 175 grain Barnes TSX, but wanted a different bullet. I worked up a load built around a 150 grain Partition that kills like the hammer of Thor. Yeah, he'll keep the rifle for years to come.

Cool. Yeah, I liked that moose photo in Barsness' article - for those who think the 7x57 is a marginal deer cartridge...

I have a Ruger #1AB in 7X57. It shoots well and I've taken 15-20 deer with it shooting 139 and 140gr, but have never dropped one without them traveling 10-30 yards. Since this rifle has a long throat maybe I should be shooting heavier bullets.

I've harvested a couple of deer with the Ruger 77 in 7x57. A pleasant round to shoot and easy to load for.

Huge fan of the 7x57. It'll really hits above its weight class loaded to modern specs with today's powder. Very much enjoy the little cartridge.

I've got one in a stainless Ruger 77 RSI that really shoots the 150gr BT well. I wish I' could get a little more speed but those RSIs are pretty short. On the plus side it handles like a 20 gauge shotgun.

Somewhere there is a picture of my Uncle many years ago with a grizzly they had to shoot on their farm with a 7x57. Like Guy said some feel it is too small for deer

With the 150 PT at 2890 (from my son's rifle) I'd feel okay hunting a whole lotta stuff with the little 7x57.. It has been a pleasure to shoot and load for..

Yep, my friend has shot moose and goats with the 150 gr Partition out of his 280 Rem at pretty much the same speed, it will work very well.

It's probably my favorite cartridge and has served me well for a long time. I've got 3 now and thought I might have a 4th one last month but didn't buy it.

My goodness! Didn't know you had three.

I did remember that you killed pretty much everything in Africa with yours, after running out of new species to take here in the Pacific Northwest!

Semper Fi, Guy

I've thought about owning one and when I saw a Super Grade in 7x57 I almost gave up on my .280 AI build and bought it. The thought was there for sure. What's not to like about my favorite cartridges daddy?? (6mm)

G'Day Fella's,

Guy Miner, thank you for sharing this with us!
I have only ever owned one 7mm Mauser (a Brno ZKK-600) and was very happy with it!
I then got a couple of .308's and well.......................
So given this experience, I have for some time now referred to the 7mm Mauser as "The Original .308", (as it was created 50+ years before it)!
It's a truly great cartridge but seems to be loosing popularity in the US,Oz and NZ etc these days but apparently not in Europe! That's understandable!!!

Doh!

Yep, I picked up a CZ last year. I haven't worked up any loads with it yet, but some 175 grain factory ammo easily held 1 1/4 inches so I am sure I can find something it likes. I still have the old 1895 Granddad gave me and of course the Number 1A I took to Africa. I did have 2 Number 1's in 7x57 several years ago, but I sold one for some reason I can no longer remember.

Guy, I certainly don't have to explain to you what a gun addiction is, but I can usually control myself on most calibers unless it's a 7x57!! I have a Winchester Model 70 in 280 Remington. With the loading I can do for the 7x57 I've wondered why bother. I've got so much brass for the 280 I've used that as an excuse to talk myself into keeping it.

It's pretty tough to beat the versatility of the available 7mm bullets on the market. And there is something that appeals to me about the history of the cartridge and it's hunting accomplishments. Maybe that's also why I have 5 .30-06's hanging around too

...my only problem w/ the 7X57, is, after visiting Al Biesen's shop as a kid, I think they're all supposed to look like this...
