95gr VLD can't hit paper out of a 1:8 6CM

I won a 20" barreled Christensen chambered in 6CM at a local fundraiser last spring. I'm running a Dead Air Nomad Ti on it and have been shooting the 108 VLD out of it for the last year. Due to the short barrel, I'm only getting about 2900 fps at the accuracy node. It's plenty of fun, but I wanted more speed for dinking around on the farm. I bought a box of the 95 gr VDL and loaded them over some RL16. I couldn't get all 3 shots out of any of the 5 loads I tried to hit the page at 100 yards. I was completely baffled. I thought it was the scope, so I swapped it out. It wasn't the scope. I thought maybe I was getting baffle strikes somehow so I took the can apart, no strikes.

I loaded up the last few 108s I had over my proven charge of H4350, and it shot tiny groups again.

Have any of you ever seen a rifle in good working order hate a bullet bad enough that it won't even put 3 on a page?

I really wanted to play with some 95 TMK, but they apparently don't exist. Now I'm having second thoughts about even grabbing them to try.

How hard are you running them? Have you tried them without the can?

Hi Jake! Good to see you back.
Sounds like the bullet isn't stabilizing.
Is the 95 gr longer than the 108 gr?

I started out at 3000 fps and ended up at 3134. I haven't tried it without the can because it shot the 108 really well with the can.

Thanks, Jim. It is a notably shorter bullet. If the bullets are touching the lands, I'm less than a half a bullet diameter of bullet shank into the neck. I almost wonder if they are spinning to fast and having jacket integrity issues?

Would seem to me that over spin would require a lot more speed, but I don't know. A friend told me that a 70gr bullet wouldn't stabilize in my 1-8 twist 6br but it did with great results obtaining one hole group of four shots at 100 yds. Not the velocity you are running but just throwing out there for comparison's sake. Then again different bullets different barrels.
Dan.

Maybe have a friend stand and watch for gray ' poofs ' in front of the target.

I dont think anything under 350,000 rpm would destroy jackets in a barrel that isn't really rough

Can’t imagine there is anyway to make that bullet shoot in that rifle given the performance to date. We have learned so much about rifles, bullets, ballistics and how to achieve results over the last 20 years, a bullet performing that badly out of a good rifle is just plain weird. That for me is the fun part, the witchcraft that still goes into shooting.

Were the holes on the target clean cut or a little egg shaped? I can’t recall of hearing Bergers coming apart in flight.

I think something else might be going on there

first of all..
it is a creedmoor...
apparently I am the black sheep and will NOT own one...

Just joking on that.. I know people love those things...

that said it seems like something else for you to be shooting that well one way and missing the broadside of the barn with the other..

rifles dont do that extreme...like be a tack driver and then act like a smooth bore

your twist is 1:8
From my math your bbl is barely sufficient to stabilize that bullet...

in a 20" gun it is even worse...

I would suspect this is it...but...I would think you'd see a key hole or two rather than missing the target altogether unless your target is only a 3x3 post it note

There weren't any holes in the paper or the board that were not perfectly round, and I didn't see the grey clouds either.

It shoots the 105 and 108 vld very well. It's not a lack of twist issue.

I made it to town this weekend and happened to find a box of 87gr Vmax and figured they would be worth a shot. I loaded them up with RL-16 starting at 42.5 gr and working my way up. Below is the first group

This got me pretty excited, so I loaded 3 more up and went to 300 yards.

I think I'm done here!

Pretty crazy that the 95 gr VLD shot so bad not sure what to make of it since everything else shoots lights out. With a 0.7" group at 300 yards you definitely have a great load, awesome group! The 87 gr V MAX will an excellent predator load for you.

Yeah, I'm still scratching my head on this as well. There's a first for everything, I guess.
