I have an older A-bolt medallion 30-06 with a plastic buttplate. I am looking to replace it with a new recoil pad. However, after I removed the screws holding the plate, it seems that the plate also has some adhesive on it as well.

Any suggestions or information on removing the plate without scratching the wood would be appreciated. Or would this be more suitable for the gunsmith to perform?

Thanks for the help

If the wood is flat under the but piece, a belt sander could be used or a chesel at the junction of the wood/plastic. If you plan to use a 1" pad on the stock you may need to remove some wood. The pad would be removed when cuting the stock.Rick.

Badger. The plate is easily removeable. I used a razorblade to slowly slice through the glue holding the plate to the stock. I then removed the plate by grabbing it with needle nose pliers and a slight tug. I would recommend the limbsaver recoil pad. Mine took just a slight moving of the mounting holes and fit like a glove.

Thank you for the info. I'm ususally not too bold when it comes to doing stuff to the stock, but this info. makes me feel a little easier.

Thanks again!!

Welcome to the forum.

You might want to use some masking tape to mask off the wood stock before using a razor blade. Just a little more protection just in case.....

I have Limbsaver pads on several of my rifles. They are very good. Another pad that is very good for field work is the Pachmayr Decelerator. Again, I have several of them on rifles I regularly shoot.
