A Warm Range Day

Thank you, Bill. I doubt that I am really that good, but I did have some fine weapons to shoot.

Pictures Mike...Pictures. You are the one always looking for pictures, so I'm going to beat you up on this!!
How did it go with the family today?

Dr. Mike,
Those are some smoking hot groups you shot. Great shooting. I'd love to see 82F here. Its been more like in the mid to upper 90's. Keep us posted if you get to shoot the 30-378. I could use some info, my friend has one we haven't had the opportunity to start loading it yet.

Don

I'll remember to grab a few pictures of the next set of rifles I shoot. I will shortly post a few pics from the range today.

Mike

Great shooting, those two are really dialed in. I don't think that you can do much better with the old Bee even if you tried. As I said before technology is great but the person behind the trigger makes the shot. Thanks for sharing. !!!
Good luck on the meese hunt.

I know what you mean about the heat. Our "two" warmest days on the beach have been in the mid 70's. Really no summer in the NW this year. Our days are already getting shorter and we are starting the normal downward trend in temperatures in about 10 days. Fall will be upon us soon!!!

Bill,

That old Bee was great. I'm not a great fan of Weatherbys (sorry, Fotis), but I have had several that just blew me away at the bench (pun not intended).

It is already dropping to 8 to 12 C in the evenings, and some of the leaves are just beginning to turn. The days are warm. Moose opens next Monday. If I tag out before 8 in the morning, I can work quickly and have it skinned and back in town before it warms. I love this weather.

Man, I am looking forward to hearing about the moose hunt coming up Mike! I imagine it should be a good hunt to get your Fall kicked off! Scotty

There seems to be a good population this year, and the moose really look to be in good shape. I'll try to get out in the next couple of days to do some more specific scouting. I really like dropping my moose in this early season. I'm not hunting horns, but looking for two year olds.

Those two year olds just sound good.. I can picture sitting over the fire gnawing on a leg bone, with a little salt and pepper of course! Scotty

How much meat do you get from a two year old Yukon moose, Dr. Mike? I have always been fond of moose meat.

Chipotle Tabasco Sauce is what you want. In a pinch, Emeril's Green Sauce will do.

Charlie, boned out, a young moose will provide me with about 400 to 600 pounds of meat. A mature bull is a big job. I don't mind working with the big fellows, but when they drop into a creek or a march in sub-zero weather, I'm less ecstatic about recovering the meat; that is too much like work. It will be enough meat to fill a couple of small freezers for a while. I try to supply my daughter and six grandchildren, and now a single mom with some immigration problems will likely have her freezer filled this fall, provided I have a few minute steaks left for the old feller. I do find moose--especially young moose--to have about the best flavour of all game, with the possible exception of black bear taken off an oat field.

Dr. Mike, that is about what I figured because your moose are pretty large compared to our Shiras species down here in the Rockies. Thanks for the information.

Shiras are smaller, but moose are moose; a Shiras is still a big animal. I would like to see it cool down a bit, but I'll take whatever I get. We have an open season for any bull for the last two weeks of August, which makes the hunt comparatively easy. After that, we count points (either a tri-palm (three points on the brow-tine), ten points minimum on one side, or a fork-horn). A fork-horn is a fork-horn, and that is my wife's request. And I always do what my wife says.

DrMike, I find that it works better to do as they say. My wife wants an elk, not a deer. I volunteered to kill one of the local overpopulated blacktail and she said, I do not want to eat venison this year, I want elk (translation, subject closed). So, I quess that my marching orders are cut!

Sounds like your wife is right on track Charlie! Heck you gotta test that 340 anyhow! Scotty

DrMike, I do have to get that .340 out and shoot something with it. I have killed several elk with the .338 WM and 250 Partitions so, I do not expect any drama with the .340 on elk.

What rifle are you using on your Moose this year?

I do not want to eat venison this year, I want elk.

Yeah, wives can speak quite plainly on occasion. Then, there are other times that we are supposed to intuit their intentions or understand by osmosis :? .

Charlie, I'm not clear on which rifle I'll carry early on. I just received more requests for load development today, though I did hedge because moose is opening. I have several I'm comfortable falling back on: 350 RM, 325 WSM, 7mm WSM, 7 RM and even the 358. I like the "whomp" of the 350 RM, but I know how effective the 325 WSM can be on moose and elk (confidence). I haven't used the 7mm WSM on moose, but the 160 AB will work just fine. The 7mm RM has taken quite a few moose with the 175 grain TBBC, and I also have a great 175 grain Pt load. I suspect it is going to be a case of whichever my hand falls on first.

Holy smokes! I thought mine was one of a kind but I see they all track like Tasco's on a 378 Wby. Just never know which way its going to go! Scotty

Man I hope you get a chance to try the 7WSM with the 160's on moose Mike. I would love to see them work on a moose. I know they will but I know someone who could use some more convincing! Scotty
