All my reloading efforts payed off with this nice cow elk this year. The AB 165's did the trick...one shot...quartering to...went in the neck and lodged behind the offside shoulder.
Thanks everybody for all the reloading help this past year.
It sure feels good to load your own bullet and kill an animal.

Great picture of a great memory. Thanks for sharing the photo. Congratulations. Any elk is a trophy. Where was this elk taken?

I didn't think to weigh the bullet...I'll do that tonight.
The hunt was in the flat tops wilderness area of the White River National Forest in Colorado. I buy the cow tags because they are half the price of the out of state bull tags. It feels like a trophy to me because everbody else packed in with horses and we had to do it by foot. For those of you who hunted in that region you will remember that the temps were lows in the teens with 35 mph winds for the first few days of first season. We spike camped at 10720 feet packing in 150 lbs for 3 miles on our backs. It was difficult, but it makes the success that much more memorable.
By the way, this might interest you reloaders...When I got to the high elevations, I shot my 30.06 again just to make sure it was on. Well, it must have been the cold temps or the high altitude becuase I was 2" low and 1" to the left (I sighted in at 200 feet above sea level and in 70 degree temps). However, in the cold/high altitude, my groups were much tighter. So after I readjusted my sights, I felt very confident in longer shots (of course this shot was only 200 yards though).

Nice cow. Good job. The 165 gr AB looks good and did the job for you.

Congrats on a great sounding hunt ! Sounds like you were around my original stomping grounds.

You're correct on the satisfaction... It certianly helps when you're working your can off packing out.

Good job, you will have some real good eating for the winter. It looks like you worked real hard on the hunt but the memories will be forever.

Keep up the tradition

Blessings,
Dan

Congratulations!

Hey, that's a good looking Rem 700 you've got there. Had it long?

Great bullet performance!

Yeah, the gun was my uncle's...he picked it up years ago in Mexico...still cleans and shoots well.

The retained weight was 125gr. So if i did the math right...that is about 75% retained weight.

Thats pretty good weight retention. What was the diameter of the expanded mushroom?

Widest point is 1.5cm or just over a half inch...it has two really well developed wings, but the third must have broken off or not expanded right. Still...i was impressed.
