Well I just sent my 300um out to get rebarreled and chambered to 300 weaver (300um improved). Should be a screamer! I will still be using 200gr ABs for hunting but I am also gonna do quite a bit of long range target shooting. My dilema is deciding between the vld or the mk. Has anyone played much with either of these? Which would you guys recommend trying first? My gunsmith praised the mk but I cant seem to get a straight answer anywhere else.

J300UM,

Welcome to the forum. Glad you are here.
The 300 Weaver sounds interesting! Is it a 300 RUM with a 40* shoulder?
What kind of MV increase is expected over a 300 RUM?

The 200 gr AB has a pretty good BC, not a VLD, but still decent.
You could shoot factory seconds for a pretty good cost savings for both target shooting and hunting.
Go to www.longrangehunting.com for some good inputs on the VLD bullets. Some of those guys are shooting 2K yds.

Post some pics of the new rifle when you get her back.

Thanks! I've been on the site for a while but my computer crashed and I just now got around to getting it fixed. I wanted to post my hunt results from this season but I lost all my pics. My gunsmith said I can expect to push a 180gr into the 3600 range. Sounds a little crazy but we'll find out. Don't be dissapointed by the rifle pics when I post them as it will still look like a factory bdl with a heavier barrel but I am having everything under the sun done to it. I wont see it again for about 3 months  but hopefully it will be worth the wait!

Welcome to the forum!

This is very interesting! I have never heard of a 300 Weaver. I do not doubt your gunsmith but it does seem odd to me. Examining the 300 Rum case (and working with it intensely for over 8 years) I can actually see little improvement that can be done to the case. At least not to the tune of adding 300 fps to an 180 gr bullet! This would beat the 30-378 by 100+ fps. I can maybe see 100 or so fps maybe but not 300. I hope you get what he promised. Do you have a schematic of the case? Who is the gunsmith? I am really intrigued.

A far as target shooting you're going to have to try both bullets. Both can be very accurate so the rifle will decide.

I see you live in Cheyenne as I do! Cool! I might even know you. Small nice town.

3600fps with a 180gr bullet sounds a bit optimistic, what length barrel is going to be on the rig? I have a 300RUM with a 28" barrel but use 165gr bullets, stopped load development at 3500fps due to the accuracy. I know I am not at the max as far as powder is concerned but sub 1/2" groups, 100yds and going 3500fps, figured it would do all I need.Rick.

Thanks Pop! Im not sure if you know me but you may know one of my lifting partners. Steve Castenetta. He mentioned that he knew a guy that was on a gun forum. The gunsmith is Kevin Weaver. He did say that the velocity of the round would meet or even slightly exceed the 30-378. I dont have a case in my hand to measure but they look like they have no taper at all and with a 40 deg. shoulder they look pretty impressive. He says he is getiing up to 10gr more powder depending on the bullet used. Even if I only get 100fps I would be ok with it. With my lack of ability to guess distance I need all the trajectory help I can get!

Yup I know Steve quite well! I bedded his 338-378 WBY Accumark this year.

As far as the distance estimation goes I have one word for you.

Swarovski!

Swarovski indeed!!! Maybe some day when my pockets get a little deeper. My bad. I miss understood Kevin. He said he had a good accurate hunting load in the mid 36's with a 165 not a 180. He said 3500 is easily attainable with a 180. Weather its accurate or not, we'll find out.

Actually I can see 3500 with a 180 given the case capacity increase. Some custom ammo places advertise 3375 fps with th standard RUM so yes.....

Where is your gunsmith loacated?

Berger VLD's work very well but are real picky about seating depth. The SMK's are more length tolerant but not quite as consisitent. Both can usually shoot better than shooter.

He is in Peyton CO. His website is www.weaverrifles.com. He's an extremely nice guy. I'll give both a try. I'm thinkin abuot the 200gr mk or the 210gr vld. I'm sure a 1-11" twist will be suitable for both.

A 180 gr at 3500 fps is smokin'. Should shoot flat as road kill!
I was figuring a 40* shoulder, not much to improve on with the 300 RUM.
My gunsmith was telling me about the 338 O'Brian. Its a 338-300 RUM with a 40* shoulder. It shoots 250 gr bullets at 3100 fps!

Let us know when you get her back and how she shoots.

Sounds interesting.
Are you going to hunt with it, or just shoot paper?
With the right, really slow powder I could see you smoking the 180's out at 3500. You might want to try some WCC 872, or US 868. Just be good and careful, and remember that every lott is different if you decide to go with the surplus powder, but at $5.00 a pound, with that powder guzzler, how could you not?
