"HELLO"...to all! My first name is Rick but my UserName here is Muldoon...as I've got a life-long football buddy that calls me that because of my Irish blood. I've been called 'other things' by him as well! I'm a hunter and shooter and have been blessed with the fact that I have my own shooting range on property that my family has owned for the last 160 years in North Louisiana. My 1000 yard firing line is only 500 yards from where I'm typing this. I have a military and law enforcement background and my wife tells me from time to time..."You don't think normally!" I told her I have two good excuses! I think I shall be happy with this forum as it appears that there are gentlemen here...as well as possibly some ladies also. I'm 76 years old and if there is anything that I've learned over my years it's that no matter ones experience.....no individual knows it all! I've been reloading since 1948 and was taught by my Dad, God rest his soul as I lost him 8 years back. I was a competitive NRA High Power competition shooter for 50 years and thanks to some excellent training I was privy to a long time back I did quite well at the game! I've instructed hundreds of shooters over the years as a civilian and military shooter and I truly enjoy seeing youngsters grow up to be excellent riflemen. I have 7 grandchildren and all are good shooters. My civilian vocation was aviation and it has been good to my family going on 50 years now! I'm looking forward to visiting with all you folks and may God Bless you all!

I have a dandy of a hunting round for deer, thanks to a fun article written by someone who once interviewed Jack O'Connor. I tried it and wow did it work!

I'd like to work up a nice round for black bear in 30.06. Maybe a 180g Partition.

I'd also like to learn enough about magnums that I could pick the one I'd enjoy loading the most

Hi, I'm in Mid Michigan. I have been a long term lurker of the forum. I've come out of the shadows as I'm getting back into reloading after a 10 year hiatus; and, I have some load development questions which will be asked in the appropriate areas.

I doubt if I will be able to help others, but typically I will offer my 0.02 cents through a PM if I have something to contribute.

I enjoy hunting & fishing. I prefer bow hunting, which was a family affair for many years.

My shooting focus has historically been for hunting (field positions), shotgun / trap and periodic local competition with the M1 Garand. I have periodic access to a 500 yard range which is about 4 hours from my home, and I am always learning something when I shot there. My family is starting to drag me into pistol shooting; which I am enjoying but am having difficulty with allocating the required time to gain and maintain proficiency. If dry firing isn't the answer than I'm out of luck.

I am currently setup to reload the 280 Remington and 30-06. I tend towards bullets weighing 160-175 for the 280 Remington and 165-180 for the 30-06.

Not to be pretentious, but I appreciate the members and moderators maintaining a courteous and family safe forum.

Welcome aboard, Nimrod84. We're always pleased to welcome new people to the forum. As you've been lurking for a while, you will know that we are not pretentious here. Rather, we are avid hand loaders and shooters who enjoy sharing what we've learned to ensure that others enjoy the sport we love. I'll be looking forward to your other questions as you post them.

Consequently, the .280 Rem is perhaps my favourite cartridge. I've had several rifles chambered in that round. The cartridge has accounted for numerous whitetails, mule deer, black bear, moose and elk. It just works for me. The .30-06 is never a bad choice for a cartridge.

The 280 Rem is absolutely my favorite cartridge and is my most plentiful chambering outside of my M1 Garands. The 30-06 in my mind is a "jack of all trades and king of none"; it is a the standard upon which other cartridges are judged but it doesn't offer me any specialization. If the 280 Rem isn't the answer then I guess I'll have to defer to Truck Driver and his 35 Whelen's.

Yeah, you will want to keep a close eye on the boys with a 35 Whelen. Consequently, I have one (my second), and it is a fine cartridge. But, then, I'm known for picking up at least one of everything. :mrgreen:

I envy your depth of rifles & cartridges DrMike. About 15 years ago I almost purchased a 35 Whelen; by the time I saved enough money, it had been sold. I've told myself that if I moved out west and hunted Elk or Moose on a regular basis I would own up a controlled round feed, 338-06, 35 Whelen or that European 9.3x62 beauty.

Any of those three cartridges will serve a hunter well. Truthfully, with your .280 Rem and .30-06, you're well-equipped for both moose and elk. That doesn't mean that I don't believe you should have whatever rifles you desire and can afford; it is just not an issue of "need." And I like all three of the medium bores you name!
