Nice day at the range. Sustained 20mph crosswind with gusts into the 30s. Lots of good practice to be had.

Was jockeying with the herd of elk/deer hunters sighting in. Always leads to good stories. Today, some yahoo in lane 9 was pushing 264 WM rounds through his 300 WM. I was in lane 2 so only got these trinkets passed down to me after the range officer sent him packing. He fired 6 rounds before he could be stopped.

Here they are next to a 300 WM casing

I wish we wouldn't open the range to non-members...

On the plus side. I had been struggling with heavier bullets in my 25-06. 115g NBT, 115g NPT, have all been grouping poorly over IMR 4350. Best groups were occasional 1 to 1.25 MOA, most were 2 to 5 inch groups during charge workups. Chrono work was pretty disappointing as well, 200 fps lower than expected. Was starting to wonder if the barrel was toast, until I remembered it lets 85g NBTs fly beautifully over Varget.

Today I switched over to virgin brass, went with Fed 210M primers rather than Rem 9 1/2, and filled with H4831. Thats more like it. 115g NBT average group was the size of best groups with 4350. My optimal charge turned in a 0.6 inch group. A little more tweaking and ready to deer hunt...

That's a decent group with your 25-06. The 264 WM fired in the 300 WM chamber is most interesting. I'm surprised the yahoo managed to get six rounds through his rifle. Guess if it didn't "explode" in his hand, it was just fine.

The RO said the man wasn't the least bit worried that his rifle sounded muffled and that there were no impacts on his target at 100 yards. A couple of rounds hit the dirt about half way to the target...

I would hope if someone noticed that the rifle report was muffled that they would pull their bolt and check to see if they had a squib first and then would check their ammo before loading a second round. But six shots? Darwin was kind today.

Nice shooting with the 25-06. Sounds like you have a winner there. That 115 BT is a pretty highly respected bullet in the 25-06.

I had something last night on a gun selling site. A gentleman advised that he was using reloads in a 243 and had a failure. He posted that he now needs a rifle because his 243 he quotes was cooked.
I asked him if he had pulled a couple of bullets his remarks they were to spec & I need a rifle not advice.
Well that makes it easy I just ignored his post :(.
I guess he has it all figured out !

Blessings,
Dan

Nice shooting. Your 25-06 will do well with the 115 gr BT.

As for the yahoo and his 264/300 WM, glad no one was hurt. You would think he would have noticed his shells being different not to mention the lack of recoil.
Keep in mind that he like many others breed and vote!
You can't fix stupid.

Nice shooting with the 25-06. I've found with mine, like you did, they tend to like the slower burning powders.

As to the yahoo in lane 9...we had a guy shooting jugs with us the afternoon before opening day of deer season last year that was shooting a 300 WM (that's what he told us anyway). I started looking at some of his used brass and it had a really short neck with a Weatherby-like rounded shoulder. I asked the guy again what he was shooting...he said a Weatherby in 300 Win Mag. He grabbed the rifle and brought it over to me & my dad, and sure as the day is long, right there on the barrel...300 Weatherby Mag. The look on his face was priceless and all he said was he was shooting the ammo that came with the rifle from whatever guy he bought it from.

Sometimes you just gotta shake your head...

Too much. As JD338 says, these people vote. Horrors!

Worse yet, some run our country. Not trying to start a political debate.

Here's a pic of the brass:

It is an interesting looking case. Can't imagine that he somehow failed to see what was happening.

Great point although if they keep that up it may fix itself. Believe someone mentioned Darwin.

Also seems to be a unique way to fireform brass in both those examples. Seems to be a little rough on brass though.

Good thing he didn't blow the darn thing up next to you though. Small blessings I guess.

I often ask myself why we must keep interfering with Darwin.

I wonder what a neck sizing die for that would look like? Looks like it fire formed quite nice though.

Most likely for the same reason he couldn't see the 300 Wby stamped on the side of the barrel and the brass head saying 300 win mag.

Reminds me of a Sesame Street tune, goes something like this. "One of these things is not like the others one of things doesn't belong.

Never been to Sesame Street, Bill. You mean there are things that are different there? :?
