I originally bought a stag varminteer and now I just bought a m4 upper what will I need to convert. I understand having a complete upper you would just pin in and go but what about buffer and spring?

If it is the same cal I would try the original buffer and spring. You will know in a few shots if you need to change things up.

If all things being equal..... no changes needed as long as you are not changing stocks.

The only possible problem might be is if you are using an upper with large pin holes verses the small holes..... there are adapater pins if that is the case.

But for the most part..... parts are exchangeable across the spectrum of makers holding to Stoners design.

Going to 16" barrel instead of a 20" barrel?

If so - to do it right you should get the carbine buffer assembly.

The standard setup will run, but under high use can eventually destroy the rifle.

I've seen some run for a few thousand rounds - but it still not the right way to do it.

Straight from the Colt armorer's course.

I think the varminter has a 24" barrel and the new upper will be a 16" barrel in the same .223 caliber. Is their something special about different buffers from company to company? I understand rifle buffer vs carbine buffer. Other than that though.

You would have to talk to someone with more knowledge than me but there is a difference between a Rifle Length Gas System and a Carbine Length Gas System in how much gas is dumped into the action to cycle the gun. From what I know the gas port size in a Carbine Barrel is different from the gas port size in a Rifle Length Barrel.

I know guys that have had cycling issues going to a Rifle Length Upper Receiver Assembly on a Lower that has an Adjustable Buttstock and thet Carbine Buffer.
