After speaking with a Govt hunter yesterday, he told me about a state survey they had conducted in Utah on thousands of coyotes over a five year period, to compile the data for avg sizes of both sexes.... the weights sorta surprised me,
Males 23lbs
Females 18lbs

Sounds about right, especially for a desert population. The genetics represented in your eastern coyotes appear to produce a larger variety, Earle.

Colder temps and further north always produce larger body sizes. Look at bears, deer, and moose for example. Utah gets cold but that is mostly the northern portion. The southern portion is rather mild.

Here in MI, I think you could add 10 lbs to those averages.
The biggest one I shot was a big male around 40 lbs.

Down in Southern California, I got used to seeing coyotes that must have been 15-20 pounds, with very plain gray hair. Not a good looking animal at all.

Up here in Washington, particularly in the mountains, the size and coloration of our coyotes really impressed me. They're good looking animals, and pretty fair sized. I don't know the weight.

This one was smaller:

Note how far it went after being hit with the 115 gr Berger VLD from my .25-06 at about 160 yards. Nowhere!

Regards, Guy

This look firmilar Guy, he looks like a kissin cousin to yours except smaller, this is #6 coyote the 90gr BlitzKing totally devistated this one same as first one, I am liken that bullet the more I see of it! Nice color something like your Wash State dog! 31 lbs.

I wish I'd taken a better photo of this one - maybe I did? Hmm. At any rate, 2012, Wyoming, longest shot I've taken at a coyote, 420 yards by laser. One shot, 115 gr Nosler Ballistic Tip from the .25-06 & 6x Leupold again.

I thought the color on this one was GREAT - but it wasn't really very big. Nice fur, October.

Cant believe the first place money on that big dog................ Wow at almost 8 grand that is amazing!

this is the reason for the polygraph test . when they first started to have these coyote hunts some of the ones brought in were packed full of gravel to bring the weight up . different clubs do different things to try to eliminate cheating . some X-ray the coyote , some have a vetrinarian there to cut them open and check stomach contents . if you do not agree to them checking it out , you forfeit the winnings . there was one heavier brought in , but he declined the polygraph test .

there were a few different clubs having hunts that same weekend . this group of guys were entered in at all the different clubs . after this is proven to be a legal kill , they will be collecting the prize money from the different clubs . this one coyote will be worth about $20,000 .

HOLY Batsheat, that is one valueable songdog, unreal.
Also shows how honest folks are nowadays!!!

I've seen guys heft a coyote, take a SWAG and proclaim #50 at least! Its amazing how heavy dead weight "feels", like the real #25 dog he was hefting, ha. I've never shot one bigger than about 28#, but he had been feeding on winter killed deer and housecats, right up on the edge of town! He is the only one I had tanned, it sits draped over my gun safe as I write this. 300yds with a 240W and 90X...right above the old gun club we use to have and where the deer used to yard up. He was harassing the deer and I was asked to shoot him. Out in the desert, they were a bit smaller, even over at Pinedale, WY. When its really cold and they have their fur all "fluffed up" they sure look big, but they aren't.

Interesting as I would have thought here in Saskatchewan the dogs would have been heavier that 23lb average.
I have never weighed any but I am quite sure I have shot a large number over the years that were in the 35lb area.
But maybe I have been wrong .

Blessings,
Dan

No I dont think you are Dan, those dogs must get alot lighter the further you go south, same as deer? How many guys would be amazed at the bulk of a big old Sasky buck!

Earle the largest Whitetail that I have had weighed was at the butchers & he was just under 280lbs :). I was with my cousin & he shot the largest body WT I have ever seen we gutted him but 3 of us could not get him into a ranger ATV we had to flip the wench over the roll cage & wench it into the back box.
I guess all the crop land here in Saskatchewan has produced very good genetics. Our Mulies surprise a lot of people as well (y).

Blessings,
Dan

Dan,
My personal best Whitetail is only 242lb field dressed, but I watched them weigh one a few years ago shot right near our lodge, that came up 303 lbs, that is the best one I ever personally saw weighed. Your provience certainly some monsters. My neighbor here hunts Northern Alberta right were the Whitetail is at his Northern Limit. As he told me where they hunt they shoot 300 lb bucks every season. Around here ANY buck that weighes over 250 dressed is considered a real beauty!

Earle last year my Son's buck came back from the butcher with 140 some pounds of cut meat including burger :).
On FB just recently there is a group called Hunting 306 and they have been keeping track of the coyotes shot & trapped in the group and we are over 3,000 and there have been a number of males being weighed at around the 45 pound mark.
It is also been noticed that they are hunting in larger packs this particular winter. It is believed because of the lack of snow they are having a lot harder time getting the deer. A large number of ranchers in the southern portion of our province start calving in February so I am sure they are being way more vigilant with the prices of calves.

Blessings,
Dan

Dan.
We have had the mildest winter ever recorded around here, there is only a foot of ice out here on the lakes, we normally have 3ft this time of year, I am happy we have been able to work on the songdogs this winter again as between my 6 and a neighbors 3 we have taken them back a bit around here, there was around a dozen of them around town at the end of deer season. So it all starts again................

$16,592 , is what that coyote was worth . there is an article in a Pa hunting newspaper that I got today . I did have a couple of my facts wrong in my other post . this money all came from one clubs hunt .
