Before i started reloading killed two elk with 130 grain Federal using Nosler BT. (one shot each) Since i have been reloading have used 150 grain BT. Now i am wondering if i should stick with the 130 and if i should switch to an AccuBond or Partition. At 500 yards doesn't seem to be much difference in energy. anyway it is fun to load and speculate. Thanks for your help ted1

Stick with the 150g for sure. It has a lot higher SD which relatively means how well a bullet penetrates. 130's are for deer, 150's are for elk. The 150's will be better for closer range because it will hold together better since its heavier and the impact velocity is lower, plus at longer range it will have less wind drift due to the higher BC, which is what you should be more concerned about. Drop is easy to get dialed down, wind is not so easy and is always changing. Less drift means higher percentage hit rates.

I've shot one Elk w/ 130gn Scirroco but have used the 150gn Partition on the others w/ 270WSM. Use the 150, I have not shot the AccuBond out of my 270 but use it or the Part.
The BT is a deer bullet. Elk are not willing to give up their feet very easily.

Ted,

I'd surely recommend using the Partition or the AccuBond with elk. Their bones can be tough, and a bullet designed to hold together while penetrating to the boiler is extra insurance. I am loading 130s in my 270WSM, but I am using AccuBonds. I am in the process of working up E-tips. The monolithic gives even more assurance on elk.

I agree with using 150 gr weight for Elk. The 150 gr PT would be the best choice in your 270 Win.

I've been shooting elk with a 270 win since I was a teenager. Back then I loaded the old solid base for deer and antelope, and the 150 PT for elk. Now I load the 140 AB for everything. Yes, you can kill an elk with a 130BT, but it is not my first choice. When using BT's on elk, I like to see then weight 180gr+. 200gr BT's out of a .338 flattens elk.
