Well, this is sort of a long story that I'll try to keep it short as possible..
This started back in elk camp. Brandon, myself and Bill (Elkman) were sitting around the table after dinner. Brandon was reading a bunch of hunting magazines every night after supper. One night Brandon made the mistake of asking what the best cartridge for elk was. Bill started and said he really has enjoyed his Model 70 300 Win Mag, explaining he has taken about 54 elk with it since 1970 something. I said I like the 338 Win Mag a bunch, but I wasn't completely sold on one thing or another. Bill said his father had a 300 Weatherby that he'd killed a whole lot of elk with as well and mentioned it might be the best of the lot. I agreed with Bill and said with 180's or 200's, it really does bring alot of oomph to the fight.
The next day I asked Bill what he was going to do with his fathers old Mk5. He said he was going up the mountain today and would speak with his father (father has been passed for a few years, but we were hunting sacred ground Bill and his Dad had hunted since the dinosaurs roamed the mountains)
Well, I'd forgotten about it, then later that night, Bill and I were goofing off and he mentioned his father thought it might be a good idea for Brandon to get that 300.. Well, I told him to let me know what he needs for it, and that was about it..
Fast forward to a few weeks before Christmas, Bill sends me a text and lets me know the 300 is on it's way. Bill said the rifle was for Brandon and I was not to paw it in anyway (YEAH RIGHT!!)..
Well, I got the rifle, put it up under the tree, and here was Brandon on Christmas morning with his MK5 Lightweight 300 Weatherby...
We still need to scope it up, but I purchased him a box of loaded Norma 165 grain Oryx's Midway had on sale for Christmas and 60 pieces of Norma brass to get it started.
Can't wait to see the boy destroy his first elk. I am looking forward to working with the Weatherby a little. Something about that big 300 just makes for a fierce elk rifle.
Plus, Brandon will get to hunt with spirit of Bill and his old man everytime he holds the rifle. It has had a bunch of success, so hopefully it keeps on working for Brandon..
