Browning A-Bolt II = Rebarrel

Guys who don't want to mess with metric threads usually don't have a lathe that has a "setting" for metric threads. Many older lathes didn't, as I'm sure a fellow with your background will already know, Kelly. You'll also know that several modern lathes do, however, have built in settings for metric threads. There are guys who specialize in building Weatherby Vanguards (or other Howa variants) which have metric threads. I suspect it's just a matter of finding the right builder who has the experience and the equipment to do it right. There are builders out there, as I've seen some very nice custom barreled A-Bolts. I just wouldn't know where to start in finding them.

Some lathes require complete gear changes to thread metric too. So it's a PITA to switch from standard to metric unless your doing multiples. My lathe has a separate gear set to switch over and I contemplated it once for something I was going to do and then I came to me senses.

You know, Kelly, I just thought of this. Before you make a tomato stake out of that rifle, you should call Browning in Utah and get them to take a look at the gun. Perhaps they can rule the receiver safe, and rebarrel it for you. Maybe even swap it into a new stock or recondition yours. Tell them the whole story, especially how much the rifle means to you. Browning is big into customer based PR. Might be worth a shot. Heck, if they charged you $750 for the rebuild, you'd only be out the scope, which you could replace for about $150-200.

Man, that is horrible Kelly.. I am sorry to hear of your Browning getting beat up like that..

Although, MG has a perfectly good SCOPED 270WSM for sale here and man, you would keep a little money in your pocket too!

Dub,

I did see this post and wanted to let you know I will call Browning when I have some time. Its not a bad idea at all and I appreciate you making me aware of it. Thanks bud.

That is pretty sweet about the JOC Kelly. I am actually pretty happy for you buddy. I can't wait to see some pictures of that rifle. I can't imagine you will be hunting with much else after you have that rifle all set up. Should be one heckuva great mountain rifle.

Mailing a deposit on a JOC this afternoon. Thanks to Chris (buckgitter) for finding me one. Pics to follow sometime in the next couple months. Got a few months to pay it off.

That JOC rifle will be a great addition to your armory. Congratulations. Pictures are mandatory, of course.

Well, the JOC rifle deal fell through for a variety of reasons. However, everything happens for a reason, and thought I'd post a few pics of a donor rifle. This rifle is slated to make a trip to Spokane, WA at some point for the esteemed Mr. Beisen to build a true JOC'esque rifle out of. Going to be a long project, but I'll update when things happen. Till then, I will be shooting the donor and hunting it for elk this fall.

Its a 1951 Pre-64 .270 Win

Kelly

congratulations, that is one sweet rifle!!! And congratulations also in getting the fine gentleman from spokane to work on in for you. The gun will be a great companion this fall when you go Elk hunting as well--I believe this is a win-win - win situation for you.

Great book also, I enjoyed all his books and wish I had a double 470 Capstick for my trip to Africa, but I dont. I will have to make do with the 375 Jeff got me into and the 416 Rigby, A got me into LOL

Very excited for you Kelly--Congrats

Sean,

Thank you very much. I agree. Its a win-win-win situation. I thought about scoping it before this fall, but I really want to buy the scope I want on the finished rifle and can't see myself spending money just to get me by when there is so much yet to get bought for this project. But, I've always liked using open sights in the timber and can't see how this won't make a fine timber gun for the time being. We'll see how she goes.

As to your Africa trip, I am happy to hear that time has finally come for you! I know its been a long time in the making and can remember seeing you post about needing rifles for that trip not so long ago. I know that both of the ones you ended up with are perfect pieces for such a fine hunt. I cannot wait to hear about your trip when you return and hope there are some photo's as well. Also hoping that progress on your home in AK has also ramped up and that you are settling in nicely.

As to Capstick, and the .470 Capstick, you never know. This first trip might be the one that inspires you to buy just such a rifle for your return. After taking that pic, I realized my blunder and thought I really should be posting a pic of a .375 H&H on top of that book, but alas I never realized till it was done. lol
