Bullet for the 7STW and whitetails?

Charlies, I agree with you that white tails are not hard to kill. The reason for the heavy AB out of the STW was to save meat. 150gr BT's at a 3400 fps impact velocity don't hold up very well. Yes, killed everything I've shot with them, but they leave one hell of a mess. However the Accubonds still kill everything I've shot with it, and leaves that nice silver dollar exit hole you were referring to.

The reality of it is that when shooting whitetails shot placement is 99% of the game. The particular bullet used doesn't matter that much in a 7STW, nearly any 7mm bullet will kill them when placed correctly. I started using the A-Max because of the high BC. They proved to be VERY accurate in my rifle so I used them for LR whitetail hunting and was very pleased with the results.
IMO, an impact velocity of 3,400 ft/sec is well beyond the design parameters for the Ballistic Tip bullets. Like the A-Max, they're better suited to longer range where reduced velocity allows them to perform better.
Dropped a nice pronghorn in Wyoming with the 162 A-Max bullet at 400+.

Worked pretty well on yotes too.

Antelope Sniper or ?

The military powder seriously interests me. My dad and I shot surplus military 4831 powder for a number of years in the 60' and 70"s. I am thinking that the WC 872 is close to H-1000. I am thinking that WC 852 is close to 4895. What would be close to 4350. ??? I am appreciating you help !!!!

WC872 is alot slower then H1000. It's closer to H5010 or 50bmg. AT about 10% slower then H870, it's off the bottom of the charts slow....which is good if you are shooting an Ultramag.
My lot of WC852 is somewhat close to H4831. Some of the WC852(f) the f is for fast, was out of spec and close to H414 in burn rate. 852 is a powder where you really have to test each individual lot to make sure.
There was some suplus IMR4895 out there for awhile, but it's dried up, and we are not expecting anymore.
I'm not aware of any surplus currently avaliable that is close to H4350. If I was, I would have some on my shelf!

I hope this helps.

I agree with you Charlies. My rig is designed for long range antelope hunting, but when a goat pops up at 125 yards, you don't wait for them go get out to 400 yards before ya shoot 'em. You just plug 'em where they stand. I'm sure the 120gr BT at 3900 would still kill a goat, but that would be one heck of a mess. Hopefully it would be a neck shot, anything else and there wouldn't be more then two bite to eat off the whole critter.

Elkman,

Take a look at gibrass.com

Some good info there in the "powders" tab that'll answer some of your questions.
Bought a bunch of brass there years ago.Mr.Bartlett is a good fella to do business with.

I haven't seen the A-Max cause a big surface splash even when shot at high velocity at short range. They may be a better choice than a BT in this situation but who knows?

Charlie,
I've got a buddy that is shooting the 12? A-Maxes out of an AR in 6.5 Grendel and getting excellent groups at every range we have shot them at.However even the folks that make them say they are not designed as a game bullet. He hasn't tried them on critters as yet. From what I understand the are pretty frangible and very likely to come completely apart on impact.
I'm guessing you have seen different results?

I've seen the 162 Amax out of the 7mm Rem vs. quite a few furry critters.... and the Amax has come out on top in every one of those exchanges. In fact.... I don't see any difference between the performance of the NBT (which I love by the way) and the Amax. Also seen the 208 (.30 cal) do some pretty mean things to four-legged friends. All in all.... I've seen about half a dozen big game animals dropped with the Amax.... all but one exited (and that one was on a large black bear at 550 yards).

Terminally the Amax, particularly the heavy for caliber ones, don't really seem to do anything different that any other cup/core boat tail bullet on the market. Never in my entire life have I seen a "splash wound"... or a bullet "come completely apart" on impact.... and I've tried... a lot. In fact, I've asked on several forums to see a picture of a "splash wound" caused by a big game bullet.... my request has yet to be acquiesced. Bigfoot.... Chupacabra.... Easter Bunny.... and "splash wounds".....

Lets be very clear. I did not say anything about a splash would. I said it would make one heck of a mess, as in alot of meat damage. As a teenager I worked in at a meat processor, processing game meat, almost all of it was antelope and mule deer. We'd see a few splash wounds each year, but they were usually from 40-52 gr bullets out of something like a 22-250.

The only time I've seen a legitimate spash wound, one that failed to penetrate to the vitals on a broadside shot with a legitimate hunting load was the very first year the BT's were introduced. It was a 130gr NBT launched out of Dad's .270 around 3300 FPS. Antelope was standing broadside at about 200 yards. Dad shot, fur flew everywhere, and the antelope too off. :? The bullet never penetrated the ribs. Second shot was a neck shot. Killed it, but the wound results mirrored the first wound. Alot of entry damage, but the bullet never penetrated the neck. The following year, Nosler redesigned the BT, and the rest is history.

Even at 475 yards, I've had 150gr NBT launched at 3500 not leave a significant exit on an antelope. Of course the goat was VERY dead, with damage to EVERY organ north of the diaphram.

Since then I've killed game every where from 50 to 1000 yards with the 160gr AB's, and I'm launching them at 3475 fps. Although I wish they would group a little better, (they shoot just over 1/2 moa at 400-500 yards) they have always killed effectively, left nice exits, and a controlled level of damage. I'm not saying they are the only bullet that can do this, just that this particular design has proven reliable in a wide variety of unpredicatable, real world freezer filling scenerios.

Not any more than any other c/c bullet smashing into hide at 3k+.... you launch a bullet out of a 7STW.... you better be prepared for some blood pudding.

Kinda funny how we want a bullet that will do maximum internal damage.... but not damage meat.

Here's a secret that I'll let y'all in on..... if you shoot stuff in the "meat".... you're gonna damage a lot of "meat"...

I concur Songdog.

I am going to hunt antelope this fall. My load is going to be my 280 AI with a 140 gr AB at 3150 fps. My partner will be using a 7mm RUM with a 160 gr AB at 3300 fps.
So long as we keep our bullets in the slats, we should be fine.

Hornady does (or at least did) recommend the use of their A-Max bullet for hunting thin skinned big game. I've had very good terminal performance at all ranges and recommend them highly for deer/antelope size game.

No different than Berger who recommends their VLD bullet for hunting even though it is actually their original target bullet. Their new "target" bullet has a thicker jacket which makes it less usable as a hunting bullet.
