I knew you wouldn't like my list but you wanted to hear what we really thought  I would use my 375 Ruger if I ever make it over there.

You really should buy the 35 Whelen over at HuntingBC :)

You never need a handgun until you really need one. I hope you never do need one.

Trust me I grew up in the Bronx NY.

I'll continue avoiding New York, then. I know from lots of evenings in Chicago that you can easily avoid questionable neighborhoods, not be out too late, stay in areas that are well-lit with people around, and cross the street to avoid any suspect looking people.

Wow... can not say anything else.

Carry some BC further in the 210-225 gr range for openers. Just kidding before Fotis. You seem to always take me seriously?

Jason,

I hope you never have a car break down in the wee hours of the morning and have a car load of thungs stop to "help you out".

30-06.
Great round, I cut my teeth on learning to reload with the 30-06.
Had 2 of them but sold them 10+ years ago.
I don't miss them, too many others to play with.

Thanks, me too. I'm not too worried about it, though, since it's incredibly unlikely already, I don't do things like drive around late at night/early in the morning where there might be thugs, I maintain and keep careful watch of my own car, and I have plenty of friends I could call which would limit my time stranded.

The chances of so many things going wrong at the same time are insane, and there are plenty of other dangerous things as likely or more likely to happen to me. To paraphrase the bumper sticker, "stuff happens". If that many things align at once and strike me down, then I guess it was just my time...

JD said it all,

Good luck Jason and remember, you're one of the few that aren't carrying in that state, legally or illegally.

I carry handguns often. I always have one when I am in the woods. I have at least a small sr22 strapped on while I'm planting food plots, clearing roads, or hanging stands. you never know when you are gonna get mugged by a big rattlesnake or hog.

the nature of my job has me driving late at night sometimes in rough neighborhoods. I keep a handgun in my car when I get called out at night. sometimes, I have to leave town for a week or 2. my wife likes knowing her little .380 is in her nightstand. it will probably never get fired off the range, but its worth 10x its value in piece of mind. actually there are loaded handguns hidden in strategic locations throughout my house. everyone in my family knows their locations. they can load, fire, and actually hit a target with them.

there is not much that is more fun than speed shooting mixed range targets with my tricked out glock 34.

I guess I see more value in a handgun than just a carry piece.

I hunt with a couple of mine. I have shot a lot of competition with some, and yes I carry for self protection....

It is not all about having something to kill someone with... Hell, in my home, it will be my 12 ga. pump shotgun with a pistol grip... and I can kill someone with a dang baseball bat, or a knife, or a car, or a hammer, or a chainsaw, or a torch,..... just makes no sense to say handguns are only for killing people with.. as a reason to not have one or need one, or to wish they did not exist....

That is the kind of rhetoric in my thinking that the Anti's will use to divide the shooting, gun owning world, and conquer us. Because they will say for example.. we just want the handguns.. and Jason would probably side with the Anti's because he thinks they are not something anyone needs.. HOWEVER, Jason, what makes you believe or even consider that the Anti gun crowd will stop there???? Next it will be your target rifles, because they are not used to hunt with... then they will take away shotguns.. then finally come after the high powered hunting rifles....

Ok, off my soap box, I apologize, but I felt that this needed to be said.... Divided we (gun owners) will fall like dominoes.

I have my Washington CCP and often carry. We live on the Canadian border and get doper's and other undesirables wandering through our fenced yard and damaging property. Border's seem to attract this element.

Oldtrader3, I am over in the Central Valleys of Washington...

I can easily live without any cartridge that requires 70 or more grains of powder for a bullet of 250gr or less.

Good one. Efficient thinking, I like it. I like the 7mm RM which can use a bit over 70 grains of certain powders, but it's really only beneficial for longer ranges. I'm sure you don't need a lot of long-range thump if you're hunting in the Catskills.

And I will not comment further on handguns. Not because I have nothing to say(I do), but because it's already taken this thread too far off course. Sorry for that. If anyone wants to, feel free to start another thread in the off-topic forum and I'll come stir the pot with you. But otherwise, I'm over it.

Anyone keeping count for the most frequently mentioned cartridges?

How many of your lists depend on being a handloader? Since this is the reloading forum, I assume most everyone rolls their own. If I didn't, my list would be different...

Rifle:
270 Winchester
35 Whelen
300 Short Mag

Pistol:
25ACP
380 Auto
45 ACP - Carried it in the service, and for some odd reason I carry it plain clothes.

Huntbear, it is a lot calmer over there. We are going to Chelan for a short vacation next month. I really like central and eastern Washington.
