Cartridges you can live without?

Yes calmer mostly... We have been burning up here.. Deer season opens on the 13th for me. Hoping my spot is even accessible with all the fires.

I hope that you are able to hunt this year. The fires are unbelievable this year and seem to get closer to civilization each passing year now. Shown below is a picture of the Wenatchie fire and a sobering pic of part of the burn.

Pretty much anything between .284 Cal. and .358 Cal. I really have no use for 270s or 6mms either.

Lets see that only leaves the 204, 224, 257, 6.5mm and 9.3mm and above categories  lots of good choices in those calibers though.

I'm including the .284 and .358 in my 'useful' category, but yes .204, .224, .257, 6.5MM, .284, .358, .400, .429, .451 are my main squeezes.

338-06 (the 35 Whelen won :)
All Ackley improved rounds except the 280 AI

That's a good start :)
I was wondering who the first responder to the Whelen shot was going to be  . Thought I might smoke Scotty out, but he must be busy with something else. I did consider the Whelen before I had the 338-06 built. Common sense took over once I realized that there was a much better selection of 33 caliber bullets and better downrange ballistics than the 35 caliber.

What makes the 280AI any more special than some of the other AI calibers out there? I hope the answer is better than "because I have one" . Some of the AI calibers don't give very much improvement in velocity over the parent cartridge, but there will always be a reduction case stretch when a cartridge is AI'd.

HOLY CRAP - now thats a FIRE ! RJ

Okay, I'll jump in with what comes to mind first.

Pistols:
25 ACP
357 SIG
357 Maximum
45 GAP
41 Mag
44 Special
5.56 x whatever?

Rifles:
30-30 without a doubt
22 Hornet
any ultra mag
50 BMG

Charlie, that is indeed a sobering picture of the fire near Wenatchee.

DrMike I thought the same thing when I saw the picture. It is horrifically beautiful but behind the beauty is the devastation of this fire and the horror of all the people who lost everything that they owned.

I think if I went with the practical answer it's too boring.. (realistically, I could live without everything other than a 30-06 and 9mm.)

Instead, If I looked into the back corners of the safe, and decided what could go that I wouldn't lose any sleep over..

Pistol:
45acp - I hardly shoot it and I carry, practice & train with 9mm. (not trying to start an old and tired debate, just the realities of what I own and what's most economical for high volumes of practice.)
9x18 Mak
32 S&W

Rifle:
8x57 - Just too many better options
.308 - This on sort of surprised me. I have a bolt gun, 2 FALs and an AR platform in this caliber and over the years they have all become 'vanilla ice cream' of the gun world. Well suited to their purpose, great ammo availability, but bland and uninteresting with other calibers to play with. It's a great round, just not all that interesting.
.22LR - Blasphemy.. I know... But it falls into that vanilla ice cream category again. the 17HMR is just more interesting...

This is the model of efficiency!

Personally I think the 17-50 BMG rox!

Wonder if barrel life is more than 10 rounds?

Joel,

The 280 AI is a very efficient cartridge. Ballistics very similar to the 7mm Rem Mag while using 8-10 grains less powder. Same efficiency is true with the 257 AI.

Charlie,

That is an incredible picture. Massive damage that will take years to heal.
The upside is the regeneration of new growth and the game that will be attracted to it.

I'd be happy if the world were without any handguns or their cartridges.

For rifles, the only ones I have any use for/intention of ever using are:

rimfire and/or .224 centerfire of your choice
30/30, 35 Rem, 45/70, etc in an open sighted, short lever action
.243 win, 250 savage, or 257 roberts
6.5 Creedmoor, 7mm-08, 6.5x55, or 7x57
7mm Rem, 30-06, or .338 Win

I can't think of any role that could be filled better by any other cartridge, and I don't understand shooting anything that might require a bigger bullet. Walking up to an animal that isn't afraid of you and shooting it at point blank range, when you aren't doing it for the meat, isn't hunting. It's trophy shooting. And I have about as much use for that as I do for a concealable weapon to be utilized against people.

Jason, your attitudes are why I do not live in the eastern US anymore. I was born in New Jersey and raised in Maine. I live in Washington now, 3000 miles from New Jersey and that is a good arrangement with me personally. I presently own (8) handguns, plus, a Concealed Carry Permit which is good in 23 states. I do carry and having a pistol has saved me on a few occasions where grievous bodily harm was about to come my way and talk was not working. In every case, I was able to stop the aggression without firing a shot.

I am presently trying to sell a couple of rifles to buy a New Frontier Colt, a model just recently resurrected, to complete my collection. This because, my old Colt New Frontier .44-40 and (3) other Colts were stolen by my retired neighbor's grandson. I suspect that he bong smoked the proceeds with nary a care about the (4) colts that he stole from me and their history or place in the world. I was a pistol competitor at one time during my life and have hunted extensively with a handgun. This probably accounts for my interest in owning, carrying and hunting with pistols.

The other little matter at stake here is personal freedoms quaranteed under the 2nd mendment to the Constitution. The NRA and over a million supporters back the ownership of handguns 100%. Maybe you are young or maybe you are niave but this is a friendly place and I will give you the benefit of the doubt. However, the no handguns agenda will not float far here.

Charlie,

You are spot on.
Too bad some just don't get it.

I wonder what the muzzle velocity might be?
Better yet will the bullets be consumed when they hit the air?
