I didn't say anything about you. Again, all I'm trying to explain is that I have a different life that leads to different activities which put me in no need of a handgun. I understand that sometimes you get thrown into potentially bad situations. I'm just saying that I wouldn't have been forced into such a situation, and have the luxury to avoid it. Easy, man, I meant nothing personal...

Edited to add, your decision to shoot or not shoot the invader has no effect on me. I don't go around breaking into people's hotel rooms, so I don't really care if people that do get shot. I just won't be shooting any of them myself.

Liberty comes with responsibility that's why most men dread it.

"One guy said he couldn't shoot well" I don't think he said that, I took away from what he said meaning that he wasn't a consistent enough shooter and lacked the confidence to take a spine shot on an elk. I know a lot of guys that claim to have that proficiency but I have rarely seen it firsthand. I don't claim to be a great shooter but when a target presents itself I will take the shot that is most conducive to killing it, biggest kill zone available .

Ask him.....SJB358

Here's his post....
If you can drill an elk in the spine everytime, heck, a 243 would get it done for you everytime at just about any range.. I am however not that good of a shooter. I will take the shoulders on a bull. Larger target and more room for error

Scotty, let me try to move this thread back to something enjoyable. Actually it has already been tried a couple of times.

Two cartridges we can not live WITHOUT 30-06 and 375 H and H

the 30-06 gave us the 25-06, 270, 280, and the late, great 35 whelen

the 375 H and H gave us in the standard length case and the slightly shortened case, 24 different cartridges, six of them being Weatherbys most famous.

Guys, Scotty will laugh at this post as he knows me, I am a dye in the wool fan of the 06 and 375 H and H and he has needled me many times that I need to get into this century LOL

hi charlie, glad your feeling better. All the best to you and I still hope you get out this year for a hunt

Your right Sean. Those are a pair of very cool cartridges and they have been changed to make some excellent hunting rounds. You really are kicking but with the 375 H&H and 30-06. Loaded up with good bullets, you've got a great pair.

Shooting on a bench or off a bipod when you have a standing target that allows you time to range and dial a scope is a completly different scenario than most of us experience while hunting. It usually is making a quick decision on whether it is legal to shoot, quick range estimate and get the crosshair on as good of a killing zone as is available. I've seen quite a few guys that can shoot "bugholes" from a bench that loose their ability to hit a barn door from the inside when a game animal presents itself. I'm not into the big boomers like some here, but reasonable calibers and bullet choices need to be used for a 500 plus lb animal.
I have shot with SJB358, and he is being very modest when he says he isn't "that good".

I could live without the .264 Win Mag, especially if 6.5-06 brass were easier to come by. The 7mm Rem really puts the proverbial nails in the .264 WM's coffin for any use I would have.

Man, I could take all of the handgun stuff, but now you have thrown the 264WM under the bus! That is just inexcusable!

I do like the 6.5-06 as well. Very well balanced cartridge. Shouldn't be nothing to make 6.5-06 brass. Run some Norma or Nosler 25-06 brass up into the sizer die and have at it.

Haha! Thanks.

Thanks Sean, my wife is on me like a chicken on an ant! No hunting this year!

At one time, I had three rifles, a 7mm Mag, a .30-06 and a .375 Ouch and Ouch. My dad and I had booked a brown bear hunt on the Alaskan penninsula and not having much money, I bought a Model 70 XTR (1968) for this hunt. The hunt never happened because dad was too busy and I kept the .375 for several years but while working in Georgia at Lockheed, I killed one whitetail with it and sold it when I moved to California.

Or .270 brass. I just picked up about 100 cases of really nice Federal brass at the range on Sunday that had been tossed in the brass bucket by someone. I load for 2 nephews that shoot .270's and they never seem to remember to pick up their brass.

See if I can paint the picture... the animal comes out of a draw and quickly disappears, and you have to make up your mind shoot or not to shoot, and another oppritunity may not come that day. But probobly tommarrow. So even though I have a belted mag that will not garantee a kill.

Does that persuade folks to hunt loooong range?

Are elk amd other larger game that difficult to hunt verses deer that pretty much pose and get dropped at 300 yards or so? They don't even know I'm around... how much more difficult is it to hunt elk or moose?

Well.. with elk, your legs will be burning and your back aching, because Elk like to live in places that make your heart want to explode. And if you hunt moose, you'll be wet and cold.

1- I don't think any of us are invincible.

Let me see if i get this straight as I commented on another of your posts....

about the movie theater.... you would have been able to avoid that aye?

2- If someone would want to go up against a firearm for your "worldly possessions" then they would want more than you possessions. What's the difference if a cop held or shot dead a thug breaking into your house to steal your stuff? You "letting them" come into your house to take your stuff, is allowing them to break the law. The law is alowing you to become a "police officer" of your own home. Imagine if people didn't police thier, "worldly possessions" and just threw up thier hands and said, "the hell with it, come in and take what you want, who cares?" Have you ever watch the movie, "The magnificent seven?" If not watch it some time. The bandits take more than thier, "worldly possesions". Ever hear the saying "give an inch take a yard?" I'm sure you have. Think on these things.

3- As far as game.... well it's about conservation/managment. EVERYTHING has to be managed. We aren't living in the Garden of Eden.

1. Of course we're not invincible. All of us will die some day, so why worry about it? And yes, I was able to avoid the movie shooting. I have never attended, and will never attend, a midnight screening of a new movie. For that matter, nearly all movies made these days are garbage and I don't have much interest in attending any of them even at regular times, either. Since it still remains that no movie in history that wasn't a midnight screening has ever been shot up, I'm not worried about being murdered at the 1-2 movies per year that I attend.

2. If someone breaks into my home while I and my girlfriend of ten years are both at work, then a handgun in the dresser is just another thing they can steal. If they break in while I'm home, I have rifles. Handguns provide zero benefit in that situation. Furthermore, if someone is so desperate that they need to break into my home and steal my belongings to feed themselves or fuel their drug habits, then I am truly sorry for that person. They obviously need it far worse than I do. It's replaceable anyway... And I've seen "the magnificent seven". I like it. But it's a movie. Most of its plot probably never happened at all, and most certainly isn't happening today. Movies and TV are embellished fantasies written to entertain and generate a profit. I keep that in mind when I watch them.

3. Nature managed itself just fine for 4.6 billion years without us. If anything should be managed, it's humans. We are far and away the most detrimental animal on Earth. But even as it is, the planet will recover just fine once we are gone. And I don't care about hunting. I hunt. But walking up to an animal that isn't even afraid of you and shooting it while it watches you isn't something I have any interest in. Sorry if that offends anyone, I was just stating why I "can live without" large-bore rifles. Finally, prove there is/was a Garden of Eden and I will prove there is/was a Nessie, Bigfoot, and aliens.

Once again, I couldn't possibly care much less about anyone else's opinions. Have them. I won't argue. But please stop attacking mine. I have no problem rebutting until I get banned or this thread is locked. I have already apologized, tried to change the subject, and attempted to drop the issue several times. But closed-mindedness and intolerance are two things I won't accept.

Nature managed itself just fine for 4.6 billion years without us

you pretty much buried yourself on this one J.....

"without us".... once us came on the scene it changed everything.

So since we have to co-exists with nature we have to manage it in order to keep order. Gabeesh?

Most of its plot probably never happened at all
the movie plot....

where do you think they get thier ideas from out of thin air? people had to deal with stuff like that believe it or not.... problem is though folks like us are generations away from actually being able to talk with people still living to tell thier testimony about it.

All of us will die some day, so why worry about it?

You sound like a pacifist my boy...

You like living in a country where people fought and died so you can be free... and all you can say is all of us are going to die so why worry about it? I think you are ungrateful.

I wasn't brought into this world to say the hell with it I don't care what happens... we ALL have a will to survive, and a will to fight to survive but if I can't fight then I know that it was meant to be my end.

Don't be a slip kid.... there's no easy way to be free.

And I don't care about hunting. I hunt

Huh?
