Could You Maintain Your Composure?

I have been pretty close to several black bears. I would have been comfortable up until the point where the bear started to wander over and give me a really close look. I would have probably said something to him a little earlier. A quiet word or two has moved them away from me a couple of times.
I was 17 measured "feet", from a large cougar one day, the safety was off, rifle was up and I was worried for several seconds. I did not even think to say anything to it, I was to busy mentally preparing myself for the charge. It bounded away. Why didn't I shoot? I was to busy admiring him/her, they are magnificent.

Magnificent deer killing machines. If I'm ever in that situation there will be a dead kitty on the meat pole.

There is not enough scent killer or scentlock in the world that could have kept that bear from smelling me ruining my trousers.

 I'm with you; I don't like them just wandering up to inspect me as if they were shopping for a steak.

Back in the 1980's I took abreak from truck driving to work as a special police officer for a major electric power co. and we had a Mt.Lion and 2 cubs take up residence on the property for a month till DNR ran them off. We had a large deer population and the plant was rather secluded and wooded. You could here her at night crying and it would make your hair stand up. I was in my patrol truck one night around 2am and saw her standing out side the door of my office. My partner was in side and I radioed him not to come out side because the cat was at the door. I scared her off with the truck horn and went in side , my partner had looked out the window and saw the cat needles to say I had to take him to the plant so he could change his Uniform and he was inside the building. I was issued a .38SPL but brought my 44mag and a 12ga. to work with me after that and never went outside at night with out one or the other in the ready position. I saw her quite a bit a night and had her really close to the patrol truck quite a few times. I think she got use to the truck and would wait for me to jump deer for any easy kill because I saw her more than once cross in front of the truck in the head lights when a deer was jumped. Never saw her take one down but was sure she did.

My son got trapped by a female cat on the trail up Whitehorse Mountain in the cascades. He was bear hunting and was carrying his .270 Win. He got away but felt pretty naked gunwise. He started carrying one of my Kimber's after that and would not go up on that mountain without them.
