I was talking to someone just recently that states he always does cow elk calling and grunting even after the Bull bugling season.

Has anyone had any success with such in a second or third season after theBullelk Rut? I am in Colorado if that makes any dif.

...I always pack a cow call. Like Dr. Mike's decoys, it can keep 'em @ least confused enough to keep 'em from bolting, if they haven't really ID'ed you. Sounding/ smelling like an elk is often enough to get a shot. Using a cow call to imitate a satellite bull stealing a cow picked me up a number of bulls that were too PO'd to pay attention...

I carry at least two, and often three, cow calls. It sounds as if there are multiple cows working an area. These have proven very successful throughout the years.

I have a friend whom has stopped several bulls headed away from him in the timber by cow calling in the middle of October. Last year he stopped my bull in a large opening, after having been shot, long enough to give me another shot. I have stopped cows and had them come towards me but not often. I also carry two and use them occasionaly but always when elk are moving in front of me.

Shot this little fella at 30-40 yards as he came RUNNING to me. He was responding to a cow call the second week of Nov. He came from a ways off, I could hear him in the timber for a good ten seconds before I spotted him at 100 yards and closing.

I'm a big believer in using a cow call, even in late seasons.

Great replies guys!

I am an ole white tail - black bear hunter so my knowledge is limited thus far on a successful Elk hunt even though I have been out there with them.

Here are the calls I have done research on thus far and considering purchasing. (I am not going to do the mouth calls, at least not this year)

1. Primos® Imaka Da BullCrazy
2. Primos® Cow Girl Elk Call
3. Primos® Hoochie Mama Cow Elk Call

Also considering the following "after the kill" tools if someone has a comment\suggestion.
1. Wyoming Knife
2. Gerber E-Z Saw II
3. Wyoming Saw

Thanks all

I have the Primos Hoochie mama call and it sounds good, but I have only used it one year and can not give you answer to how it worked on animals.

The wyoming knife is great and quick way to get started on animal. I have used my on several deer and one elk now and it unzips them almost like a zipper. Very handy and light.

Great thread! I know what I will order from Cabelas today.

Bass Pro would have them too I think. Might be worth a trip North to visit me and check out the Bass Pro and Marine Museum! I have the Hoochie Mama and a couple cow calls. Never leave the East without them. Scotty

I haven't found any of the cow calls to be superior to another. All seem to work well. I believe I have five at the present, and including those that Gil carries, between us, we use about eight or nine cow calls. All seem to work when not used excessively. They will stop an elk that is trying to move away. They will calm cows that are growing uneasy. They will often bring a bull in to quietly inspect the beauty of that lovely cow he just heard.
