First Range Report

Here is where I am at the moment.

IMG_9349.jpg

Jerry and I had a ball today shooting. He was working with his 338Win Mag Vanguard and I was working with my 340Wby. Much more has been done outside of what I am going to post today. My focus at the moment is on the 250gr bullets. I have tested 200gr SST and they average 3204fps and are 9/8" -1 1/2" in group size. I have tried 210gr Partitons and 215gr SBT but accuracy is not what I want but velocities were there.

Now, my rifle is a fast rifle, when compared to Weatherby factory balllistics shooting Weatherby ammo which list the 250gr Partition moving 2941fps and my rifle with this ammo recorded and average of 2990fps.

It is shooting Accubonds and Partitions very well but not settled on a load yet, lots of work to still do. Will also be testing the 250gr SBT.

Here are the results of the two best AccuBond loads form my work so far.

Group size is .657" moving at 2913fps

Group size is .910" moving at 2917fps

Here is the result of the Weatherby Factory ammo 250gr Partition

Three shot Group size is .437" moving at 2990fps

Five shot Group size is .727" moving at 2990fps

Second Range Report

I have now a couple of hunting rounds for big game with my 340Wby. I will use the Weahterby Factory Ammo 250gr Partition for dangerous game and my hand load using the Sierra 250gr SBT for all other big game.

The Factory ammo I have already posted the accuracy and the results on my first range report with a five shot group 7/10" and moving at 2990.

The next load is the 250gr Sierra SBT moving at 3020fps and group size is .558", using Weatherby brass, Rem 9 1/2M primers, with IMR7828

First here is pictures of the brass

Third Ranbge Report

Today was an interesting day as I tried the Fed 215 and Rem 9 1/2M primers in my 340Wby using 250gr AccuBond and 250gr Sierra SBT for velocity and accuracy while using IMR7828 and H4350. Also Rem 9 1/2L and Fed 210 primers with TAC and AA2495BR in my 358Win.

I decide to load below max a good bit to see how my 340Wby would respond in accuracy.

In the 340Wby the Rem 9 1/2M primers out performed the Fed 215 primers in accuracy and tied the Fed 215 primers in velocity. Average velocity of both primers in equal number of rounds fired with H4350 and IMR7828 was 2887fps. Rem 9 1/2M had best group and that was with the 250gr AccuBond.

In my 358Win using TAC and AA2495BR the Rem 9 1/2M out performed the Fed 215 in velocity and accuracy, while the Fed 210 primer out performed the Rem 9 1/2L in accuracy but not velocity. Average velocity of Rem 9 1/2M was 2535fps and average with the Fed 215 was 2522fps. Fed 210 had the best group and that was with the 225gr Sierra using AA2495BR.

340Wby - 250gr AccuBond using H4350 moving at 2846fps with Rem 9 1/2M primers, goup size was .537"

358Win - 225gr Sierra SBT using AA2495BR moving at 2361fps with 210 Fed primers, group size was .682"

bullet,

Nice results!
What was the speed and accuracy of the 250 gr AB?

JD338

Group size is .657" moving at 2913fps for the AccuBond. If I get over this velocity the groups open up. Fastest I was able to push the AccuBond was 2994fps but accuracy was not there.

Mike,

As has been said on other threads, that load is a hammer. It will do for whatever you may hunt in North America.

I would do a full magazine test before settling on the Sierra SBT if I were you. I used them in my 338WM for a few years before realising that the tips were deforming badly in the magazine from recoil. The 1st two would group pretty good, but the 3rd, & 4th would maybe hit paper. If I shot them single shot, they grouped great, but once in the mag they would destroy the tips, & accuracy would suffer.
(Your rifle may not have this problem, but mine did.)

Ever use those 215 Sierras on game?

I did with the Sierra bullet in the 338Win mag and the tip shapes did not change my group consistency in three shot or five shot groups. But thanks for the thought.

No I have not but GB300wm (Jerry) did this year out of his 338Win mag on deer and it was very effective indeed. It did it's job in spades.

I now have three different rounds that are accurate and can be used for specific applications on big game.

1. AccuBond 250gr moving at 2913fps

2. Weatherby Factory 250gr Partition moving at 2990fps

3. Sierra SBT 250gr moving at 3020fps

Max Point blank range is 340 yds when zeroed at 270 yds.

To put things in perspective - below is the ballistics for the SBT

Yards Vel. Energy
Muzzle - 3020 - 5063
100 - 2852 - 4515
200 - 2690 - 4017
300 - 2534 - 3565
400 - 2384 - 3155
500 - 2240 - 2785

That is a whole lot of steam and very flat shooting. Wished it wasn't so far away to next Fall. Can't wait to hear about it on some game. Scotty

You and me both, I can't wait

You just cant beat the flat and power of these cartriges.
Depending of the animal, the 225 AccuBond at 3100+ fps. does real well also. Great caliber and the pictures are awsome. You should be doing the layups for some of the hunting and shooting magazines. It's that good!

Thank you for the compliment but I would not even know where to begin to do contact someone to do lay outs. Plus, I am sure that stuff is all taken up by folks, but once again, thank you for the compliment Greg.

You are so right about not being able to beat the flat trajectory and raw power of these cartridges. You have a great day.

I combined all of my load work and put it under my original post of this thread. Thank you, sorry for all the threads. :)
