I'm considering using 69 gr Nosler Custom for varmint hunting, the shoot well in a 1-8" AR 15 flat top, but will they expand? They have a larger hollow point and seem to have a thinner jacket than Match Kings, so if the core is not too hard it seems they might open up.

Failing that any recomenations? I've tried 40 BT (excelent in .22 hornet, and slower twist .223 bolt action) but no luck in this upper. I see that Noser is intrducing a 60 BT, is it, or the 55 gr lenght tolerant for magazine use?

Thanks

Does anyone have BC info on the 60 gr BT?

Still if anyone has tried the 69gr cust. comp. on varmints I'd like to hear how how they worked. They are cheaper than the BTs, plan on using them on prarie dog hunt, so cost is a factor. If the Cust. comps work hunting I could buy in volume and use them for NMC shooting as well.

The 60 gr BT has a SD of .171 and a BC of .270.

I have not shot anything with the bullets you are talking about. But, I have shot a few coyotes and one javalina with 53gr Sierra Match bullets, out of my .223. Most coyotes have been shot within 150 yards, and only one needed a follow up shot. The Javelina was shot at 50-60 yards. I found the bullet against the offside legbone, fully expanded, similar to most big game bullets I've used. I had these loaded, somewhat slow. If I remember correctly around 2,500fps. They all worked great.

I've shot thousands of prarrie rats with the 52gr sierra match and 52gr nosler CC. They launch the dogs 3-4' in the air, and spreads them all over the prarrie. My Bushmaster upper seems to like the 69gr CC, so I hope to try them when the season opens up on the 15th.

We don't design them to do anything more than punch holes in paper but I've spoken with plenty of guys who have shot rats or p-dogs with them with explosive results. I'd give it a shot.

Went ahead and tried them anyway. Expand and fragment they do! Made fine buzzard soup. Impacts on loose dirt on the PD mounds were about 2" around and about 1/2" deep, occasionally with fragments of jacket material and core visable.

Glad I used them for a magazine lenght load. They suffered in the wind, and did not have as flat a trajectory as 75 gr A -maxes. The differance was quite noticeable in the field as wind picked up and distances increased. I would not of wanted to give up any BC to use a lighter bullet.

Yep. I tried them as well out of my AR last weekend. There were lots of dead prarrie rats.  They didn't flip them in the air as far as the 52gr did, but they handled the dirt much better.
