Greetings from Sitka Alaska. Just found this site and it looks awesome. Every fall I head up to the interior hunting and the one rifle that I use is the 338. This year we are going after Dall Sheep.

I inherited a Winchester pre 64 270 from my uncle. I want to work up a load for it for the sheep hunt. I have reloaded for many years but have not loaded the 270.

Any suggestions for a great load. Thanks in advance.

Welcome to the forum buddy!

Longwinetrs said it the best but I would add RL22 to the powder list.

Thanks for the reply guys, that gives me a good starting point.

Welcome to the forum.
I also endorse H4831 and RL22 with the 140 gr AB.

ok I pulled the data from my Nosler book and I dont see anything for the H4831 or RL22 in the 140 gr. I must have an old book because it shows IMR 4831. Are these new loads?

I use 58 grains of RL 22 with the 140's, but work up to it, its a near max load according to my book.

Same for H4831 about 58 grains. I use CCi primers for the 270's as well, but it probably doesn't make a difference.

Another vote here for H-4831, but make it H-4831SC cause it meters well. I have not used it for 140's, but I have loaded both 130's with 59.0, and 150's with about 54, IIRC grains.

This site is quickly becoming one of my favorites. I have dies on the way and need to order brass. I've always used federal but am open for suggestions with the 270.

I guess I am on old timer who does not want to change much. I have a new 270WSM and I shoot 140 grain bullets in it, BUT, if I had a 270 Winchester you can be assured I would just shoot 130 grain partitions in it and be done with it.

I also would use H 4831, a classic powder for this cartridge. I have several buddies who shoot 270 Winchesters loaded with 130 Partitions over H 4831 and they have accounted for a bunch of wild hogs, deer, antelope, black bear, etc.

Some of you may remember an old sheep-hunter by the name of Jack O'Connor. In his book, "Sheep & Sheep Hunting", he speaks of the best rifle/cartridge/bullet combination he used. It was a Win. model 70, .270 Winchester, 22" barrel, loaded with a 130 gr. Nosler Partition bullet and 62 gr. of H4831. His claim was that if it would group under an inch at 100 yds., that would be good enough, 'cause a sheep hunter shouldn't be shootin' at any sheep over 300 yards. Old Jack didn't like scopes over 4x for sheep either, he had his ways.

Whatever you choose to use, I wish you the best of luck!

Hey Jeff thanks for the comeback. I'll give your load a try. I see that your from North Pole. I go up there every year for moose hunting. I have some real good friends in Delta.

I shot a 393 B&C Caribou there last year and almost brought it into your taxidermy there, the guy does outstanding work, but the shipping back here would be alot. I always stop by the shop to look at the trophies, hopefully this year I'll have a nice sheep!

Are you happy with the groups of that load?

Keith
