Howdy all.

Looking to rechamber a Winchester Model 70 from 30aught to 35 Whelen. Not looking to break the bank to get it done so I've been looking around at different places. ER SHaw looks like they have a moderate price for what I want done. My question is what are the quality of these barrels like? I'm not looking to shoot lights out. Want something that will get the job done which is point at an animal pull the trigger and see it drop. For the money are these barrels worth the effort?

Thanks,
Tico

My buddy built a 260 Rem on an ADL action with a Shaw barrel. His shoots MOA so he is happy with it.
From what I have seen they are good to fair on the bad side.

I have one on my Whelen, (721) action and get 1" groups with it. I am happy with the work and price!

Tico! Nice to see you here. If I were in your situation, looking to swap out a barrel and not have to mortgage the farm (or the lodge...) I'd give Douglas in WV a call. They make nice barrels (Melvin Forbes uses them on his UltraLight Arms rifles, and I've got a few friends with them) and they're not insanely expensive. You can get that .358 barrel for about $220 or so, I believe, and then pay to have someone mount it on your action. Go ahead and spend the money to true the action while you've got it apart, and you'll still likely only end up with something like $550 in the whole setup, and probably a lot less. Heck, for $275 or so, Douglas will sell you a finished, threaded, crowned, polished, cut to length barrel, ready for a chamber reamer and mounting. I'm not sure you'll get out any cheaper with the Shaw barrel, and I've not heard terribly good things about Shaw barrels.

Tico, welcome into the Nosler Forum as well buddy. I think Dubyam gave you some great advice as well. I kinda forgot about Douglas as well. They are another good barrel maker that'll give you a quality barrel for a good price. Again, I think the smith putting the barrel on the rifle means more than the barrel itself. Having someone good putting it on and making sure it is correct would give me more assurance than the barrel itself for the most part.

That will be a sweet set up once you get it completed. The Whelen on a M70 is a dream rifle. Scotty

Tico,

Welcome to the forum. Dubyam has given you some excellent advice; Douglas produces a fine product that will stand you in good stead. The 35 Whelen, especially one built on a Model 70 action, will be a real keepsake.

Thanks for the welcome and the info guys.....I'm going to keep looking around and I'll let you know what I end up doing...

Thanks

Dub if I had to mortgage the lodge that would be the end of the 35 whelen :)

There goes the neighborhood.

Just kidding, Tico, welcome to the forum. I have heard good things about McGowen for reasonably priced quality barrels.

I'd look for a used Whelen, I walked into a local shop this week and found one. It was a Rem M700 BDL in a grey synthetic stock, plus it had sights for a $425 was the price tag. Even if you sent your rifle off to ER Shaw I don't think you could rebarrel your M70 for tha price. If I didn't own a Whelen already I would have bought this one.

That BDL would have been a great steal. Someone will get a fine rifle when they buy that.

still in load development so far with 130 AB and 44.0 of H4831sc im getting about 2.5" group. but that was the first load i tryed.

I had a Ruger 77 Mark ll, had a Timney trigger, a HS stock and a 26" shaw barrel Med Heavy in 6.5-06. that rifle would put 5 shots in to one hole at 100 yards! shaw installed it. if you have a friend with an FFL they will discount the barrel but not the smithing! I still think that is the case.
Good luck!

Tico, I am looking forward to seeing how my rifle turns out. I have a feeling it will be good though..

Looks like I'm a little late to the party Tico but I'll give you my experience with them. Like Scotty said, it does not matter what barrel you have if it's no properly installed. My M700 ADL has a Shaw barrel on it, and it shoots itty bitty groups(for a deer rifle) and I'm sure when I get to rolling my own, it will do the same or better. Although, my barrel is from the early to mid 90's and they may do things different now. I don't know, but I can't say enough good things about mine.

Just my .02

Mike, that's a sharp rifle. Now get to loading Sarge! You need some 7mm bullets to get you started?
