With the Fall hunting season up us, what are the rifles you are all planning on giving a workout? What sorta loads have you worked up for them or found (factory loads) for?

I will be pretty slim on rifle hunting this Fall. Mostly just hunting with my 338 Win Mag for elk in Oregon

I worked up a good load with the 210 PT running around 3050 outta my rifle. Furthest I have shot it is 275, but it seems to be solid.

Should get a couple more days at the range before I depart, but everything looks decent.

The 45-70 if I get up to the Adirondacks to put some time in, in the big woods.

Shooting 405 grain cast loads outta this rifle with 40 grains of RL7. Runs around 1600 out of my Guide Rifle.. Still gotta get a final zero on it, but it shoots well.

Probably get a bunch of time with my old 11-87 Slug Gun. Run 2.75" Buckhammers outta that gun and it stacks them.. Not fun to shoot off the bench, but with the new 1.5x5 VX3 on it, it points well and it straight hammers deer.

Different scope on it now. Still works pretty decent though..

What are you all rolling with this year?

My 308 Finnwolf took a deer this past weekend. Still do not know what to carry for elk

45-70
444
35 rem
30-378
270 Bee
who knows?

So far, I've used the .280 Remington loaded with 150 grain ABLR to take an elk. I'm also carrying my 9.3X64 loaded with 250 grain AB and .270 WSM loaded with 130 grain E-Tip, and I may yet grab the 325 WSM loaded with 200 grain Partitions. I'm off for another elk later this week; I'll likely carry my 35 Whelen loaded with 225 grain Sierra Game Kings. I am still looking for a good sized black blear, using whatever I have in hand at that time. If I am able to specifically look for one, I'll likely carry an older .280 Remington loaded with 139 grain Hornady SP. I am looking for a whitetail. When I focus on that, I almost always carry either my .280 loaded with 139 grain Hornady SP (it's an old friend).

Doc, I've had mine for over half my life at this point, mine too is an old friend, but I think I'll let her rest in the barn this year. I may end up taking the scope off for used on another particular rifle if I can get it ready in time!

Mike,

The old .280 needs to get out for a walk-about once in a while, just for old times sake. It gets carried at least once each year. Admittedly, the newer .280 is seeing more action this year, and likely for some years to come. Who knows, the older Featherweight may find a new home one day soon.

Sako 85 Kodiak .375 H&H mag 300gr nosler partitions
Sako 85 Bavarian 7mm Rem mag 150gr swift scirocco II's

10 more days to go!

Lou

I have already taken a Elk with my 35 Whelen using 225ABs :). I am hoping to have my 280AI. for Muley & Whitetail 8). If not likely my old reliable 270win in my CDL.

Blessings,
Dan

In 2 weeks I will go antelope doe hunting with my Encore 209x50 on Fort Carson or Pike national forest. It will take a lot of luck and test my stealthiness to pull the trigger. It is sighted in with 348 powerbelt and 110 tripple 7 using win 209 primer.

November 2-10 elk season my m70 7 rem mag will get carried again. It is a little heavy but all business when I pull the trigger. The load is 160 Partition propelled by 63 gn Rl-22 and Fed 215.

Looking forward to shooting a late season doe sometime between December and end of January with my T/C ProHunter 25-06 with a freshly developed combo of 115 BT and 47.0 IMR4350 Fed 215. Am also hoping to call a few coyotes with it between now and then.

On non windy days and for night calling either the Prohunter 223 w/ 50 v-max or CZ 204R w/ 35 bergers will get used.

I'm shooting my 6.5-300wm again for deer season starting Thursday. It already has a cow elk this year. Despite having many guns I usually cling to one for a few years and then move on to another. This one is as accurate as I can shoot it most of the time and even seems to shoot smaller groups than I think I'm shooting. So I'll stick with it until something else strikes my fancy. If I get time to mess with my 7-300wm over the winter it might be the new toy for next year.

The downer is I got a new HD5 5x25 Zeiss for it but it showed up today and season opens in 2 days. Not enough time to push my luck as it's dialed in with the Leupold 4.5x14 now. I put two 1 1/2" apart at 670yds and 2 about 3/4" apart at 500yds the other day despite some shifting wind so I think the deer better be a bit scared inside of 1000yds or so.

Nathan that is terrific shooting, you will do great, find a big one for us to see. !!!!

I know where a big one (well in the 30's) was a few months ago Bill. I'm not sure he will still be there come tomorrow but I'm going to look for him. It's been quite a few dry years for shooting a big buck so hopefully this is the year. The rifle is dialed and impresses me every time I take it out despite how over-bore it is. It thinks it's a benchrest rifle most days. What's not to like about that? Ammo is loaded, guns dialed, the Terrapin is packed, and the Leica's are ready.

Will be taking the Lasermark 270 Weatherby magnum loaded with 74 grains of IMR 7828 and WLRM primers behind a Hornady 140 grain BTSP. Whitetail, mule deer and elk are on the agenda. The 150 partitions are for moose and bear. I changed the scope, put a 6.5x20x50 Leupold VX3 AO on it. I did put the Elite 4200 I took off it on the 22, but way too much scope. Went back to the 4x Leupold on it. November can't get here soon enough. There will be snow, it's all frosted up outside right now, temp around 30. I always manage to mangle a few coyotes and badgers while I'm in there. I have seen wolves and the landowner wants me to smack them too, and cougar is also on the game plan in where I go. Lots of them here. Good luck to all this fall.

Well the 280AI for deer and the 338-06AI for elk. The 280AI is running 160's under .5 at 100 and it has been waiting patiently to get its chance. The 338 will be running 225's at 2700-2750 and shoots under an inch.

Awesome pair of rifles Jake. That is probably one of the most well rounded pair of rifles I have seen in awhile.

Your 338 sounds ready to get it done brother. That's a great combo!

RG, that 270 sounds pretty awesome. It is a screamer, that is for sure!

I'm feverishly working on some last minute rifles.

The 264WM is coming together, so I think there's a good chance that one gets to go, but it's not done yet. Here's a "pre scope mounting" pic:

My 30-06-turned-35 Whelen just returned home today while I sit here at work. After I get in from bowhunting tonight, I plan to get it in bedding and shoot this weekend. Hopefully it comes together fast and I'll take the 264 and the Whelen. The Whelen was with McMillan getting a stock issue sorted out. It just was delivered to my wife this afternoon at our house, so tonight the race begins on that one!

I have the 264 running RL33 and 140AB's, and the Whelen will be getting IMR4320 and I have 250gr HotCors and 250gr PT's on hand.

I don't have a pic (yet) of the Whelen. I'll correct that soon.

If for some reason that pair doesn't work out, I have my M70 EW 300WSM ready to go. 180PT's going 2900, topped with Talley Lightweights and a Leupold VX7...should work. :)

Paired with it will be my pre64 M70 in 30-06, delivering 165PT's at a relatively moderate 2700fps, topped with Leupold PRW's and a Minox 3-9x40.

The 264 is glassed with a Swaro Z3 4-12x50BT in Talley fixed mounts, and the Whelen will have a Swaro Z3 3-10x42 in Leup STD mounts.

That is one FINE 264 Tom. You did right getting all over that when you saw it.

I like this one. My Ruger 77 30-06. Check the price on the box of Federal ammo. I have several boxes all new in the box. I like my reloads better than factory and this was a gift.

Very nice. It is a solid classic rifle. That 1.5x5 looks great up on top too...

Tom, that is a handsome stick on your 264 WM. I'm a sucker for beautiful wood.
