I got the call yesterday afternoon after getting in from hunting. "Mike, why don't you shoot a swamp donkey with your 9.3 this year?"

"Travis, don't tease me. Besides, I just shot my moose yesterday."

"Oh, well, your 9.3 is ready anytime."

I couldn't get down there until this afternoon. However, I picked it up, together with a 1.5-8X32 Minox ZA5 for my 280 Ross. Well, here is the 9.3X64 Brenneke. Unfortunately, I won't be able to get out to the range before next week with it as I'm busy for the remainder of the week.

The boys threw in a box of RWS 9.3X64 Brenneke cartridges, so I have something to shoot when I do go to the range. I have 250 pieces of brass and a good selection of bullets, so I should be loading shortly. I am officially stoked!

That's a beauty Mike, what kind of barrel did you end up going with? A 286 gr Partition would be great for big coastal grizzlies BTW :)

It's a PacNor 12 twist Super Match #4. I'll likely shoot 286 grain bullets, though I'm ordering in some 300 grain Swift A-Frames to toss out of it. However, you are correct that a 286 grain Partition at 2708 f0s generales4658 fps of energy at the muzzle. I believe it would work quite well for coastal grizzlies. I hope to take it for a mountain grizzly within the next year or so. I may yet Teflon coat the barrel. I'll see.

Bill, thanks. I'll wring it out in the next week or so. Elk opens September 1st. I suspect that if I can get this shooting like I want, it will accompany me.

Mike your killin me here as next week or so will be Sept 1st. I want to see what the 9.3 with a 286NP will do to an elk although I'm sure if I close my eyes and wouldn't have to try very hard I could guess with great accuracy what the out come would be.

Mike,

Beautiful rifle, congratulations.

Looking forward to your range report.

Wow... Quite a rifle!

Now quick, go stack up some moose meat and shoot it again with the 9.3!

Thanks, fellows. I'm pleased with how the rifle looks. I requested two pins, but the stock already has an internal pin. I also requested that it be pillar bedded, but after talking with Travis, we decided that since the Winchester recoil lug is fairly large, to see how it works as is. In short, I can live with what I've got, and I anticipate that it will shoot quite acceptably. I won't shoot another moose this year, but the rifle may just tip an elk and/or a couple of black bears. I suppose it would work on a mule deer and/or a whitetail. Mike, the Swarovski Z6 (1.7-10X42) is one of my favourite scopes (I have three). This one has the TDS reticle, which can be quite handy.

Nice Model 70 Sporter custom, DrMike. It should do yeoman duty with elk, moose or bears. Very nice rifle.

Charlie, the big selling feature was that it upped my bore size.

Mike! That rifle is beautiful. I actually like the look of stainless on the blued action! Wow, it is perfect all the way around. Those Talley's look excellent holding that Swaro! What a cool rifle. I am really looking forward to your range report with this rifle.

Give us a report of the 1.5x8 Minox as well..

As soon as it is mounted and I get the dies from RCBS, you'll have the report, Scotty. The 9.3X64 should generate a report shortly. I have a few rifles stacked up for load development this coming week, and I imagine the Brenneke will be stuck into the mix at that time. I would like to tag an elk with it. By the same token, I hope to tip a mule deer and/or a whitetail with the 280 Ross, so it has to be readied pretty quickly.

I've looked at the silver and blued contrast since getting the rifle home, and I don't know. It may get Teflon coated after this season. I'll see what I think after a while.

I have another stock at the shop. It may have to get something built for it as well. Two cartridges keep bubbling to the surface: a 358 Norma or an 8X68S.

Mike, what a cool year for your hunting Mike. Yeah, I am watching your progress with the 9.3 with open eyes.. It is a very cool caliber!

Now, as to a 358 Norma or 8x68... Well, that is a tough one, but another REALLY cool pair of rifles buddy.. Man, you are on FIRE!

DrMike, my average bore size is going to reduce soon. After NH Lymphoma and TB I can not get my weight above 135 pounds and my FEV is <10% now. My elk hunting days except hunting on a handicapped placard from the truck window are about over. I will keep the .338 Federal and .30-06 for crossover elk, just in case. I had a good run but it coming to an end at least unless something changes.

Really nice 9.3x64 Winchester and I hope that it gives you great service.

Looks sweet! I know I asked this before but that round requires the Mag bolt face, but if a guy was to run a 9.3X62 it's a standard right? 24" on the barrel and stainless?

The 9.3X62 requires the identical boltface as does the 8X57 (0.470 inches). The 9.3X64 is slightly larger (0.496 inches). I built this one on a standard rifle action. It required some slight modification.

So the 9.3x64 doesn't need a .532 bolt face huh? Your smith just opened up the bolt face? It would be hard to not build a 9.3 of some sort after this I think.. They are starting to grow on me, the more I read about them and I would love something to blast those 286 PT's.

9.3 x 64, Swaro Z6, and Swift --what is not to like

Congratulations Dr. Mike --very beautiful rifle.

We have a friend that is having a custom 9.3 x 64 build and he will get his for christmas, he is waiting semi patiently . It is such a great caliber Dr. Mike

Your post and acquisition reminded me of the following. About five years ago around a campfire in S. Africa, a gentleman from England and a gentleman from Germany argued for hours about which is the superior round. 9.3 x 64 or 375 H/H. Those not involved in the discussion thought it was very entertaining.

Scotty, you need to have one of these classic calibers and also a 6.5 Swede. They would look nice in your gun safe with your other fine rifles. Just a thought
