First elk hunt is officially a go

Thanks guys!

I think l'll make a pack list and post it and see how it looks?

As for showers, I'll have the ability to shower where I'm staying.

:)

Man... Some day I will kill an elk by a road and I will take a shower in elk camp!

Dan would appreciate that.

I will also endorse a pack of baby wipes. Not only are they worth their weight in gold on the backside... but after dressing an animal out, two or three of them go a long way in wiping any blood off your hands and arms.

Another essential I never leave the truck without is a roll of electrical tape. Comes in handy when you accidentally stick your hand with your havalon blade 1/2 way through boning out an elk 7.5 miles from the truck and need to stop the bleeding with toilet paper and tape... or so I have heard :)

Ah, the voice of reason and experience (y) ... through observation, of course. Wise counsel.

He pleads the fifth Dr. Mike. No sense in self incriminating me...er. I mean him.

Tom, several of the fellows have given you good advise in reference to your feet. Dont go cheap on boots, Kenetrek's are good, train in the boots you will wear on the hunt, change socks at least twice a day. hang your boots upside down at night, all advise they have given you and it is good advise. Pat and salmon chaser mentioned trekking poles and they are correct. Also use them on your walks before the hunt. I dont know the terrain that you are hunting but if it was here I would tell you to invest in a pair of larger baskets so that you can turn your trekking poles into snowshoe poles.

We are in constant hunting mode, so to speak, so we have the stuff the fellows have mentioned plus more but a lot of the stuff we have you should not need for just one hunt. But I will say that you can not over prepare for medical issues and/or needs, even if it is make shift like Pat's electric tape and baby wipes--it works in an emergency and that is what we are talking about . Tom, is your oldest daughter going with you and Dan ? What a great adventure that would be for her. From memory she is already hunting with you.

a week or two with no shower , baby wipes feel like a shower .

That is a fact.. I went a month with baby wipes.. I was WAY overdue for a shower, but man, without the wipes I would have been just short of miserable..

after awhile the bears don't even want to bother with you .

Megan won't be going on this trip. She's not really interested in the effort this hunt will require. She's more into whitetail hunting.

I am probably taking her to Texas in two years as a grad present (she is heading into 10th grade this fall).

Looks like my boot options are narrowed to Crispi and Kenetrek. Needing 'Squatch-sized boots makes this a more expensive proposition.

Ha! I hear you on the boots. I vote for Kenetreks all day long. You cannot beat calling them and speaking to a Hunter on the phone that understands the situations you put your boots in and should something happen to them they will bend over backwards to make it right. I'm actually going to get a 2nd pair so I can rotate a little more often.

It SEEMS like Crispi's US presence is similar.

It just sucks your soul out of you to go boot shopping and see 13 as the top end.

I hear that. I have worn a 14 and sometimes a 15 in sneakers since about 1993 or so.. Just depends on the maker..

Yep. Now that my runs are getting longer, my toes are getting beat up in my running shoes. 30min runs I was ok, but now I'm really feeling the beating with longer runs. Figured out I need a real roomy toe box. Same for boots. My second toe is longer than my big toe (on both feet). Means a narrow toe box is a problem.

Probably gonna need new runners out of this deal too. Never ends....

I had worn a size 12 for as long as I cam remember till I broke my ankle and now that foot requires a size 13 so I have one boat or shoe that fits and the other is loose. :x
