Can any one share the pros and cons of coatings such as Cerakote, KG Gun coat, Dura coat, etc., for action, barrel, stock? Does this make sense with stainless steel? Thanks.

No first hand experience with these coatings but I would think it would give your rifle better concelment with a non glare coating.

I have used the Duracoat on 3 rifles and am about ready to do it again this weekend. I like it,fairly easy to do,not real messy. I put it on my .308 that I took to Alaska, and after all the rain, walking through the brush and all the other crap I put that rifle through- not a mark on it. I am sold on the stuff.Hope this helps.

Dont you need an airbrush to apply it? I recently returned from a Montana hunting trip and my blued gun was a rusted chunk of metal the whole time. I am definatly interested in Duracoat but havent seen my airbrush since art school like a decade ago.

Yes you need an airbrush, but it is not difficult by any means. You can actually by the kit from them as well. Here is alink to their website:

What type of barrel prep is necessary?
Mike

Depends on what your barrel is covered with now. If it is good shape they recommend roughing it up a little with a Scotch-brite pad then using a good cleaner afterwards.I recommend their TRU-Strip, it takes everyting off and doesnt leave a residue. I'm sure Rubbing Alcohol would do the same but I would stay away from Carb-Cleaner or Brake Cleaner, they are oily when your done. If the bluing is pitted or rusted up I would use some fine grit sandpaper (400-500 grit) and sand as much of it off as I could.

On mine since it was new and blued, I roughed it up, cleaned it off and sprayed away. Looks great and had held up so far.Good luck.

I have used dura coat 3 times, twice on rifles and once on a pistol. I love the stuff. Easy to put on and, if you follow their directions it will look great. I have a picture of my 7mm Mag, however, you cannot see a lot of the detail. I followed their directions and put a "splatter coat" on this rifle and it is awsome. I would go with dura coat, use their equipment and follow their directios and you should have no problems.
Good Luck!

Rust is neglect.
Gun coatings are great but you should give your firearm some respect and take care of it. :!:
Try using a rag with some gun oil on it to prevent rust. :x
My brother in law takes better care of his lawn mower that his guns and that is sad.

I want my savage Tactical to look like that...just the stock though.
Is this spray stuff or what? How is it done?

They sell kits. From a very basic one to some expensive ones,I ordered the level II kit comes with the brush and bottles and some propelent. It also comes with attachments for an air compressor.
