I was in my local gunshop where I have a pretty good relationship with the owners and they offered me a Rem 700 barreled action for less than $150 -I don't say no to offers like that. It's a standard action with a .473 bolt face. I wasn't planning anything new but...... . I'm thinking a 6.5x280AI or 6.5x284 Norma throated long. I don't belong to the 6.5 club yet. I have a fast 6mm and almost done with the 280AI, have a 30-06 and 35 whelen. If I were to do a 338-06 I think I'd use a Winchester or Ruger action. Am I missing anything? Or, I could pass it on to someone here for a real good price. 8)

I would do the 6.5-280AI just for the addition speed and better use of a long action. It would basically be a .264wm. The 6.5-284 might be a bit more accurate but just like in cars......there is no replacement for displacement. Or you could open the bolt face and do a 6.5-300wm for more speed :).

I'd just go the plain vanilla 6.5/06.

Then again ... I have a Palma contoured 22cal 1:8" stainless barrel at 27.5" length and an SPS Rem700 in 270Win plus a Boyd's Prairie Hunter stock opened for the larger contour, and we're just waiting on the 22/06 reamer to bring the components into 'harmony'.
Cheers...

I'll take that action! Or you could build a .257 Ackley if you don't belong to the quarterbore club or the 6.5-280AI and have it throated at 3.4+" for a true screamed with 140's.

Jake,
The .257 idea is one I'm working on. I have a 257RobAI and have a nice older Ruger in 7 mag that I'm going to rebarrel into a 257Bee. I'll let you know if I decide to pass on this action - I've got a lot of irons in the fire right now. Thanks

Like that SS FW M70? I gotta get me one of those for my own 6-284. The one I'm loading for is my fathers and its got a left handed stock for a right bolt. Reminds me everytime I shoot it too.

I do like the 6.5-284. That would be a great cartridge, sure to satisfy an itch for at least a week or two.

I vote for the 6.5/280AI. I almost went that route last fall but went with a 270 wsm instead. One of these days I'll join the 6.5 club.

I'd probably be likely to do a standard 6.5-06, too.

Dangit, I shouldn't have gone to eat. Jake beat me to the punch!

Hey Scott, did your buddy have any CRF mag bolt face M70s?

Kurt,
I don't think so but I'll ask. The shop got asked by the local PD to assist in getting rid of some old evidence and unclaimed property - they're raising money to replace a canine officer who had to be put down.

6.5-284 Norma/Winchester is just perfect for that action.

My Rem 700 270 will one day be turned into the 6.5-280AI. More room in the neck for seating further out than the 6.5-06 and the brass is already AIed!

"I have a fast 6mm and almost done with the 280AI, have a 30-06 and 35 whelen."

You don't need anything! Sell, it and spend the money on Nosler bullets for your other rifles!

Rommel - That 6.5x284 sure is sexy! Definately on my short list.
Guy - You are so practical and your logic is impeccable but I'm not sure that I'm mature enough to go that route.....oooooh bright shiny thing. Seriously - What I really should do is build a range/tactical rifle(308) and shoot thousands of rounds through it so I could get really good shooting from all the field positions. I'm a fair shot and at 500yds or less I wouldn't want to stand in front of myself but I'd really like learn the craftsmanship of shooting out to a 1000 yds.

I really like putting guns together, getting them to shoot and learning about different cartridges and trying new to me cartridges like the 35 Whelen. I'm really having fun with it and the 300Rum these days. I'm still working on a 90grNAB load for my 6x284. I am a tinkerer and wondering what if and then trying it out. Not much for the whole scientific method and I don't think like an engineer but I do love to tinker and gain new knowledge. If it was just about hunting or shooting I'd only own 2-3 guns and spend my money on trips and ammo. It's fun to be part of this forum with other like minded individuals and so many others who have such varied and thorough knowledge.

6.5x47 lapua
6.5x284
6 BR
6mm AI
257 Bee

Just some that I would like to have. Or you can sell it to me for $300.

That 6.5/280AI sounds like a good one. It should be a screamer. I like the 6.5's and think they offer alot of benefits for shooting long. Low recoil is nice too compared to the bigger numbers..

good choice in caliber I have owned all but the 257 weatherby and still own the first two. that being said if your wanting to go out to the 1k Mark on targets build the 284 if your building a hunting rifle go with the 6.5 06 or ackley
