I was in my local gunshop where I have a pretty good relationship with the owners and they offered me a Rem 700 barreled action for less than $150 -I don't say no to offers like that. It's a standard action with a .473 bolt face. I wasn't planning anything new but...... . I'm thinking a 6.5x280AI or 6.5x284 Norma throated long. I don't belong to the 6.5 club yet. I have a fast 6mm and almost done with the 280AI, have a 30-06 and 35 whelen. If I were to do a 338-06 I think I'd use a Winchester or Ruger action. Am I missing anything? Or, I could pass it on to someone here for a real good price. 8)

You need a few more actions :p
Either of the 6.5 rounds you mentioned would be good, but not a lot different than what you have to fill a need 280AI for larger game, and the 6mm for smaller. Just my thoughts, but certainly nothing wrong with filling the gap, regardless of the marginal difference.
The suggestion of a fast twist .22 would be cool,,,again throated long in the .22-243 Middlestead class or even the 6mm Rem necked down. Or even a fast twist .220 Swift Improved
Or rabid small game, needs something in the .375 class or bigger  Opening the bolt face to handle the .376 Steyr would be cool too.

6.5-280 AI cut for Nosler brass would be nice. Enough 'more' than the 284 to be worthwhile... Nippin on the heals of the WM I'd think?

6.5x47 lapua
6.5x284
6 BR
6mm AI
257 Bee

Just some that I would like to have. Or you can sell it to me for $300.

good choice in caliber I have owned all but the 257 weatherby and still own the first two. that being said if your wanting to go out to the 1k Mark on targets build the 284 if your building a hunting rifle go with the 6.5 06 or ackley

Why the difference Jeff? School me mate.
sorry scott for not responding very quickly, I like the 6.5-284 but if i were to build a purpose built hunting only rifle i would build a 6.5-06 the reasons being 1 you can get better velocity out of the 6.5-06 and therefore more energy. 2 the 6.5-06 will feed out of a internal magazine extremely well. however if you run a centerfeed magazine the 6.5-284 will feed well also. most people dont like the magazine sticking out of the bottom of there rifle but i do. the 6.5-284 i own is getting tired so i am taking the stock off of that a mcmillan a5 and that is going on the 300 norma. the lawton action on the 6.5-284 will be going into an a3 sporter with a lighter barrel chambered in 6.5-284 with a dbm system for hunting. so a bit of hypocrisy here but i have 500 pieces of 6.5-284 lapua brass laying around and have no problem shooting deer or antelope past what is thought of as further than normal distances with the 6.5-284 and a 140g berger vld. i have taken a few animals past the 500 yd mark and am confident with the abilities of the 6.5-284. but for the record if i were to build a hunting only traditional style rifle i would go with a 6.5-06 or a 280 ackley.
