Has anyone hunted Hawaii? The family have been talking about going to Hawaii for vacation for years and we naver have made it. Anyway with the youngest graduating this year its probably time we quit talking and actually do it. Kinda leaning towards Maui and while looking at things to do I actually came across some hunting, and the more I'm get dug into it the more interesting it is getting. I always heard about the hogs and was never really interested, but then came across Feral Hawaiian/Spanish Goats, and Axis Deer on Maui, and the big island also has Mouflon and black Hawaiian sheep. They are all invasive so there is alot of opportunity and generous season I was thinking that the goats would be a fun excursion and cool trophy. The axis deer is apparently some really good meat too. Still just in the begining stages of but thought it I was there anyway why not try a hunt. Anyone done it or looked into it at all?

Interesting, I didn't know there even was hunting on Hawaii. I am of Hawaiian decent, but I have never had the chance to visit the islands. If I ever had the opportunity to go there I certainly would be interested in hunting while there. Seems like it could offer a unique experience. Let us know what you find out and decide on.

It’s on my bucket list. A buddy hunted Hawaii (not sure which island but thinking Oahu or Maui) on vacation. I believe he only had to pay $250 for permission to hunt private. He took an Axis buck and his brother in law took some kind of goat. Lots of steep hills to climb.

He took a Ruger American 7mm-08 and 140 grain Factory ammo. Had a heck of a good time.

I haven't hunted on the big island but would suggest talking to a guide service. Getting firearms to the islands can be a challenge due to the local laws. I was there last summer and there is no shortage of hogs and goats roaming around the west (Kona) side of the island. I believe there is a Meateater episode where Steve Rinella hunts goats. I mention this to take a look at guide options.

Ben,
I was in Kona. I would definitely use an outfitter/ guide and their firearms. Just less hassle.

Have watched a number of hunting shows from Hawaii; Meateater, Trijicon's Sports Afield, Larysha's Unleashed, Jim Shockey, etc...
I definitely have axis deer and mouflon on my Bucket List and Susan wants to hunt the Black Hawaiian sheep, and possibly feral Spanish goat...and we both would love to do some marlin fishing too! Some of the hunting is on the main island while some is on Lanai.
Just haven't contacted an outfitter yet for pricing...
If we do take our own rifle, it would be the 6.5 CM, as it worked well on the red stag, fallow buck and arapawa rams.

I’ve hunted Guam in the South Pacific.

In 18 months I killed 37 hogs and a 6 point Philippine Sambar Deer. All with my bow while still hunting on the ground. No blinds or hunting from trees. I was the Chief Conservation Officer for Andersen AFB from ‘93 to ‘95. The bow was a Golden Eagle Formula 3D. Drawing 82lbs with an overdraw, shooting 26” Easton 2317’s tipped with 125gr NAP Thunderheads.
