Hunting Season Workout

With my surgery last year, and the fact that I can't burn calories like I used to, about 6 or 8 pounds has attached itself around my middle. I did hunt clear up until the middle of last month, but have not been able to shed it yet. I hit the treadmill for the 3rd day in a row and the bow flex a couple. Both of us are really watching what we eat and when my wife is watching what she eats, "we" eat less. I am feeling really mobile and will be moveing south for a couple of months and daily hikes will be back in the schedule. Might even chase a dog or two. While I am there.

Great to see everyone working out. I have done a few things to help me get working out. The first thing I did was simple and easy. I put a nice bull elk as my screen saver. Every time I look at my phone I see it and thing about hiking up the mountains some day. I also downloaded My Fitness Pal on my phone and am watching my intake. I started this 3 years ago and dropped 35 pounds but since have put some back on. The last think I did was join some guys at school twice a week to play basketball before school. We start at 5:30 and play full court for 90 minutes. Most of the time it is 3 on 3 so we really run a lot.

By doing these things, I have lost 6 pounds in the past few weeks and my lungs are rebounding from playing quicker.

Keep up the good work everyone!!!

teacher, now I know where my 6 pounds, came from congratulations, I found it. Keep up the basketball its great exercise, especially 3 on 3.

Only about 10-12 miles. Something like that. We had some mechanical troubles with a couple of the bikes. Ice in the gears, chains etc...

Major league fun though!

The basketball thing is really great. You have to get up and go because you don't want to let your buddies down. We also play to run that is why we run full court. I have not played basketball since my freshman year of high school but after a few weeks, I was shooting okay and was able to remember how to dribble and pass like the old days.

Back at it!
Got 60 pounds in the pack and did 1 mile at a nice steady pace with no breaks. Took a bit of a vacation from exercise and I could feel it. That was done on the treadmill with an incline.[emoji4]

Thanks Dan. :)

I'm feeling it today, the second day, after a workout on Tuesday. I'll do it again today and tomorrow and then take two days off.
I will be strong!

A pox on Christmas dinners!

Christmas dinners?
I eat big all year. 2 servings of oatmeal and raisins, 3 sandwiches, and 4 granola bars to get me through the day. Now for a light dinner, one box of Hamburger Helper.
I'm a growing boy. :)

Joined a gym today. Got a great workout! I'd forgotten how much I enjoy lifting weights, the smell of sweat, the sounds of people pushing hard, pumping iron. It's an older gym, but a good one. Emphasis on free weights and quite an assortment of weight machines, as well as some good cardio devices. It's down near the "loop trail" where I bicycle most often. I can easily bicycle to the gym, about a mile and a half, workout, then bicycle the "loop trail" which at it's shortest is 10 miles.

Normally on weekdays I add a little to the loop and get 13 - 15 miles, and on weekends I get 25 miles or more each day. I'll just be adding a weight workout to that now.

Was trying to do this at home, and reasonably successful, but there's stuff I can do at the gym that I just can't do at home. My doctor actually encouraged me to join the gym. I haven't had access to a real gym since retiring from the police department and losing access to the gym we built there.

By the way, all the weights and equipment were purchased by the officers, to the tune of $40,000, or about a grand apiece.

I was pleased to note today that I hadn't really lost much re the weights, but I could sure tell I am not in top form! Felt good to be back. I'll hit it again tomorrow morning, before the ride. Today's ride was in mixed rain and snow. Good stuff! You Marines may remember this: "If it ain't raining, we ain't really training."

Ooooh Rah! Guy

I did my routine last week and started my routine for this week after two days off.
Still have 67 pounds in the pack but I could feel my endurance improving. After that the wife and I took the four dogs for a walk. I'll do it again tomorrow and then take a day off. I tell folks what I'm doing and they think I'm nutz. To me that means I'm doing it right. I'm not pushing too hard, I know my body, and risking an overuse injury. I'll just plod along until hunting season. That will tell me if I did it right or not.

I Will Be Strong!

I am in west central Az. Daylight comes late here. I have a 2.5 mile course laid out on a modest hillside. Most mornings I am done at 7 ish or so. Had to give up the weights for a while, my specialist says I have bone spurs in my shoulders. Reading a book, or swinging my arms while hiking causes substantial discomfort. Probably another surgery, as soon as we return north.

Snowing and raining here in the Pacific Northwest this morning.

Spent an hour in the gym, pumping iron.

Changed clothes, hopped on my bike and pedaled 13 miles with my equally crazy bicycle buddies.

It was a GREAT ride! And a GREAT morning.

BTW Elkman. Recently re-learned that I'm mortal too, and am hoping for an early date for some spine/neck surgery. Ugh. Another battle back into fitness after that I'm sure. Ugh.

Meanwhile, "Damn the torpedoes, Full speed ahead."
