Hunting Season Workout

67 years old and out speed-marching with a ruck!

What are you thinking Elkman? Aren't you supposed to be on a porch somewhere?

Man, I hope I can still do stuff like that when I approach 70 years! OUTSTANDING!

You've got about 10 years on me, and like you, I've found I have to work hard and be a bit careful about my workouts. Most of the guys I work with are 15 - 20 years younger than me. Keeping up with them is an inspiration to stay active!

Besides, I don't like sitting on the porch anyway. Apparently you don't either!

Great Job Bill! Isn't it great to kick some young whippersnappers butts!!

I made the switch yesterday. Instead of walking the neighborhood with the 65 pound packframe, I started mowing the grass while wearing the frame. It takes me 1 hour of continuous mowing to accomplish it without the pack so I figure that is about 2.5 miles. I also kneeled down quite a bit to pick some weeds and crab grass. Coming up from a kneeling position was a heck of a workout!!

I have my exercycle on the porch, don't go dissing porches until you are 70 years old or so!

That is fantastic !! That has really got to be building you up aerobically, and probably helping the legs also

Longest ride of the year today. Four of us went 45 miles on our road bikes. Only one real good hill on the route, but plenty of riding along the highway, with a pretty good shoulder for safety.

I led the group on the way back towards town for about 15 miles. Don't have a speedometer on my bike, but one fellow tucked in behind me said I was averaging about 20 mph for the 15 miles. That's pretty good for me, particularly this early in the season, I'll take it!

Of course he complimented me when he passed me near the crest of a hill, saying "You ride strong!" As he was passing me. Hmmm. Who's strong? I think he's got me beat!

All this bicycle riding is working out well. Not losing much weight, but am getting in better shape, no doubt.

BTW - Saturday before starting the evening shift I was in the gym with two of our young cops - guys in their early/mid 30's. They were doing one-arm overhead presses with a 100 pound dumbell... Dang. Pulling it up off a thigh-high stack of wrestling mats, up to the shoulder, then pressing it overhead all in one smooth move, four - six reps, then the other guy would hop in and do his. That's pretty strong... One of 'em is big and rarely runs, but I've seen him jog 3 miles no problem. The other guy is smaller, maybe 6-00 or 6-01 and 210 pounds... Doing one-hand overhead presses with a 100 pound dumbell. He also competes in triathlons. Yeah, I was impressed. Wow... Quite the combination of strength and endurance!

I do believe I would be impressed as well, Guy. I should imagine that rowdy fellows in the local bars could be mightily impressed should they fail to heed a warning.

Doing 5 miles a day 6 days a week hiking (walking very fast) with my stuff keeping each mile 15 minutes or under. Will continue to increase my distance as the spring and summer go on and will take at the end of July, August and September a 20 mile hike keeping it under 6 hours.

I am pumping my little air bike everyday. Maybe this year I can actually go hunting again?

Hey, I sure hope so at least once or twice, I will pray for that!

45 miles, WOW. What an animal!! Guy you are doing outstanding !!

Thanks, but no big deal, just sit and pedal. Stand up from time to time too. Pretty much every summer I work up to a 100 mile ride. I think we're pushing it to 75 miles sometime next week.

I do enjoy the rides with my buddies. Great group.

I have been out and about in AZ, Nevada and SE California, visiting friends and hanging out, the last couple of weeks. Managed to log 19 trail miles this week in some pretty nice country. I am amazed at the desert environments.

The desert is nice but harsh.
It's already 90 degrees here and getting hotter. Makes for tough workout conditions and requires one to hump a lot of water. Water is heavy. I came home from work and donned my pack and proceeded to do Step-Ups yesterday before hitting the treadmill and then finished with push-ups.
I ain't in very good shape but I will be in better shape come hunting season than I was last year. One thing I've noticed with all this exercise, my knees don't bother me as much. When I wasn't exercising I'd have to call in to work on some days because my knees were hurting too bad to work.
Really looking forward to my "Poor man's sheep hunt" this year.
Oldtrader, I too hope you get the chance to hunt again.

Vince, it sounds like you have accomplished a lot, since we started this topic. I have been supplementing my diet with a little Glucosamine, for my knees and hips. Its a proven fact that if you do not exercise a joint it will eventually fail.

Keep at it buddy, and you will, congratulations on the effort, keep at it. !!!!

Elkman,

Thank you.

I'm not where I want to be but I'm getting there. I have good days and bad days as far as my motivation and sometimes I let life get in the way. What keeps me going is not wanting to be, or feel, as embarrassed and ashamed as I was last deer season. That was on me, nobody else.

Your Iron Man ways are an inspiration to me, you and Guy both, and give me the little "push" I need sometimes to go on. I may not ever be as good as I once was but by God I can be better than I am now! I've allowed myself, I work a dangerous job, to come home and vegetate and do 12 oz curls instead of working out. I find that with a little diet modification, exercise, and goals to work towards that I'm better at my job, sleeping better, not as tempermental, and look forward to tomorrow. Not that I was ever nuts but I'd dread going to work and having to possibly get in another fight. I still dread the fights but from a different perspective now.

The best thing is not having to call in because I'm hurting too much to work. While I can't say I'm pain free any day of the week it's a lot more bearable now. Now I need to see if I drew a Bighorn Tag. That will really test me. I won't hold my breath but I want to be ready just in case.

Almost bit off more than I can chew on our 75 mile bicycle ride this morning. In years past, that distance was no big deal, but I haven't been riding as much the past few years, and today it showed, particularly on the long, steep hills above Lake Chelan. But, I made it, along with my two bicycle riding buddies.

It was a fine day for a ride, just farther, and steeper, than I was really ready for. S'okay though, now I've got another goal to attain - riding that route faster & better! Maybe next week...

Regards, Guy
