Hunting Season Workout

I can ride 75 miles and don't find it much of an issue.

On my Harley of course.

Good on you, Guy. That is hauling it. I can do 75 miles easily, so long as it is in my truck.

Guy, if you really want to be a man, then I have a plan. Let me bring a little red wagon and attach it to your bike and I will ride in the wagon.  All kidding aside, I really think it is cool.

Gee - thanks guys - Bullet - I'll have to think about that offer... Might drag the wagon along on a mountain bike ride, you know, the bumpy route next to the cliff...

Yeah, 75 was a bit much for me so early in the season, but we did it anyway. Funny thing, at 57, I'm the youngest of the three riders yesterday. One fellow is 64 and rides almost every day, year round, he's the best rider of us. The other guy is a phenomenal rider at 75 years old. A retired carpenter and he's tough as leather. Great guys.

Going out for a much more modest 15 mile ride with them and some other folks this morning. Should be a lot of fun.

Then work hit the gym for some lifting before another 12 hour night shift tonight. Ugh.

I need to think about retiring so I'll have more time for working out, fishing and shooting!

Regards, Guy

Hey Guy, on second thought since you mentioned the cliff, I will take rain check on that ride with you.:)

Awww... I fell off my mountain bike and darned near off that cliff a few years ago. Was never so happy to land on a bunch of rocks... Instead of missing them and landing on the other rocks faaaar below.

I mountain bike gentler, more forgiving terrain now. The landings are easier!

Mike, I was all prepared to say that I'd pay good money to see you seated in that little red wagon as it was towed behind Guy. Man, I'm disappointed.

Yeah, well the way he was talking it would have only been an empty one after the ride so I have saved you money.

75 miles, I can't imagine !!! My shoulders and thighs would have become one by then. Great ride !!!!!!!! Great effort, Guy, keep it up !!!!

Wasn't going to do it, but just signed up for a 100 mile ride this coming weekend. Ugh.

Should be a good ride, it's through some terrific mountain scenery. As long as I can keep from over-heating, I'll be fine. Going with a couple of serious bicycle monsters... Hoping to hang with them and make it in six hours. That's a reasonable target for a 100 mile ride, for a recreational cyclist.

That should be a worthwhile endeavour, Guy. I need to get a bike and begin riding. 'Course, I'd require skis for most of the year.

That's great guy, congratulations, it will be a great ride I will bet.

I have been bitten by the sloth bug, hoping to come out of it soon. !!!!

Just saw this thread....

First off, Charlie, I hope you get to go hunting this year. I know how much you miss it, and hope you get out there. And your determination sure is an inspiration to me, and I'll remember it on days I lose my motivation a bit.

Guy, that's great with the bike! Holy cow! I have been thinking of adding the bike into my routine here soon, too....but you'd smoke me without a second thought!

What I've been doing- Around the end of Feb., I got a new iPhone to replace my old one with a cracked screen. This led to the inevitable "app search," and I've been mulling in my head for years that I need to lose weight, big time, and starting getting fit. I let my weight just creep a little bit higher each year, and I was really starting to notice it in pictures I was in. Like, REALLY notice.

So I found a food journal app selection, and went with one that looked good. Told it I wanted to lose 2lbs per week, and it gave me a daily calorie budget. Then I logged my food intake and exercise output for the day, and could see where I REALLY stood. Boy, was that an eye-opener.

I also started on a treadmill, doing the "Couch Potato to 5K" running program. I started doing pushups and situps, too.

After progress on the running but not so much on the pushups or situps, I found apps for those, too. I'm working on programs to get to 100 pushups without rest and 200 situps without rest. When I started I could do 15 pushups and 33 situps without stopping. Last status check, I did 30 pushups and 50 situps, but my set counts on the situps are now higher than 50, so I know I've made progress. Last workout was 100 pushups in sets, and 245 situps in sets.

At Scotty's recommendation, I got a pull-up bar for the doorway. Boy, did that humble me. Couldn't even make upward progress, let alone do one! Could only somewhat slow my decent if I did "negative pullups" (jump up and try to hang/descend slowly). Can get about halfway up now, but can go down in 6-10" steps, hold, pull up a little, and then descend another 6-10" and repeat. Definite improvement, but man my arms and lats need the work!

I also added in kettlebell training for weight work. Love it! Can't recommend it highly enough! I started with a 20lb. kettlebell, now I'm on 30lbs, and I would guess about the end of June I should be ready for 40-45lbs.

As for running, I finished the 5k training, and I'm now on a "5k to 10k" program. Last "long" run I did was 35min of running, and got 3.4 miles out of it. Not blazing speed, but it's a HUGE gain from where I was.

So, after this much too long post, where was I when all this started? Not proud of it, but I was somewhere between 270-275lbs. I am 6'1-6'2" (depending who measures me), and 37 years old.

Today, I weighed in at 230.2lbs. I had just bought jeans with a 42" waist that were comfortable, now I can't keep them on me. I bought 38's that are getting a tad loose, too. My wife is irritated that I'll need to give away or sell those jeans, but I'm not!

If I stay on this trajectory, I should be somewhere between 190 and 200lbs for the Oct 5 opener of archery season. I figured out that I now weigh less when I go out for turkeys, in my boots, gear, and toting a Rem 870, than I weighed last spring when wearing just a t-shirt and shorts.

If I can do it, trust me, anyone can. It's all a matter of motivation and finding what works for you. Not everyone can run, so cycling is a good alternate. Or hiking. In March, I spend a lot of time with my Labrador doing shed antler hunting. He loved it, and I got miles under my boots. I also just had him evaluated for bird hunting and he did fantastic, so I anticipate training him this summer will get more mud on my boots, too, and then there's hunting in the fall with him to get some miles behind me.

I am planning to add in, at least once or twice per week, what Pat is doing with a weighted pack and going for a hike. Running is good, but it's not boots on rocks or hillsides.

OUTSTANDING! Looks like you're not only giving a good try, but making great progress.

Way to go!

This morning after my 12 hour night shift, on a lark, I decided to try some dead lifts. I've been working on them, sporadically. Used to be a big part of my workout, but not so much anymore. It's been years since I was serious about it. Lifted 315 pounds, three times. Not bad for a 57 year old cop at the end of shift!

Now it's time for a nap. I hear I'm supposed to BBQ venison burgers for everybody this afternoon.

Regards, Guy

Very impressive, Guy. Afraid that heavy lifting has fallen by the wayside for me. Course, it tells when I have to drag a hindquarter out of the bush anymore.

I'm too tired to workout today.
Arthur has paid my knees a visit, couldn't sleep last night, and had to run to two fights today and even got to wrestle with 400 pounds.
Did squats and lunges yesterday and notice I'm in better shape already than last deer season. I ain't where I want to bet, yet, but I'm getting there.

That's great, Vince, that you're seeing progress. One thing I love about smartphone apps for this kinda thing is it makes it easy to track your progress, and seeing that incremental improvement is such a motivational boost.

Guy, thanks for the kind words. My knees were getting inflamed from the running on the treadmill (MCL and LCL were both getting sore), then strengthened and got better. Then I went out on the road, and the cushioning was gone, so I went through it again. Now the knees feel good, but my right ankle is feeling it (specifically, the interior extensor retinaculum is sore as heck). I have to take it easy on it and do some ankle strengthening, but I think I need new running shoes. My wife is resistant to that concept, as I just spent all of $50 on the shoes I have, and I only have about 80-90 miles in them, but what I can read on the topic tells me that I couldn't possibly have purchased WORSE shoes for myself than the ones I have. I'm hoping another pair of shoes solves the problem.
