Well, I wished I had some success pictures to post up, but we hunted probably one of the nicest areas I have ever hunted for elk, that should have had alot of elk, unfortunately, there weren't very many elk at all. Never saw an elk in the area in 5 solid days of hunting. It was very nice country, with alot of wolf tracks and howling going on, but not very good for deer or elk. I am thinking the wolves have hammered the elk into areas where they aren't really coming out of of the timber, and the timber they are in, in almost inaccessible. I hunted harder this trip than I ever have and covered a whole lot of ground. Anyhow, I do have some nice pictures of the area.

Here is a picture of of doing the final pack up of our packs

5.1 miles down the trail, we set up our camp for the next 5 nights. Planned to stay longer, but we weren't getting into the elk, but we had a nice camp.

Here are some shots of our first mornings hunt. We were packed in a day and half early, so we did a little scouting. The scouting was pretty slim, and we got soaked our first day out. It made for a cold, damp day.

The 338 Win Mag taking a bath.. Not the last one it got either!

Good rain gear saved the day. Although, I spent the day in the rain, underneath, I was still dry!

Bill and I did venture down to the lake we were camped next to. Brian had to make an errand the next day, so he missed the photo op!

There was also a crashed B23 from 1943 on the Southeast Corner of the lake.

Some more of the hunting country.

Here are a couple of pictures of Brian. Probably carrying the best looking rifle in camp... I'll let him tell that story!

Some more shots of the country we were in.

This was near the end of our camp time. We packed up, went back to the truck and decided to hunt another unit to our South.

Well, we hunted directly to our South after moving to Bill's RV and getting closer to our hunting grounds. Here are a couple of shots of Brian climbing a small hill.

These were taken nearly at the top. Here is where I saw the first elk of the trip, about 1 mile or more away. It was a nice bull, but way out of reach for us that day.

Here is the little 10ft rock face that Brian "almost slipped to his death" at...

The following day, we hunted another area. Nice easy 3-4 mile hike through dark, big, green timber. Spotted 2 cows and 1 spike, stalked up to 50 yards of them. Only had a small opening in the timber, and the cow masked the spikes vitals as he slipped out of my life forever, but at least I got to smell some elk!

Overall, it was a great time hunting with friends, but with the wolves hammering the elk, the elk aren't nearly what they used to be in the old country that used to be pretty fun to hunt. Ah well, it'll give me a chance to stretch out and try some other places I should be looking at.

I am sure Brian and Bill will chime in with some details I skipped or left out. Good hunt though, great hunting partners.

Man, great photos Scotty! And WOW did that multicam blend in with those rocks you were sitting on! Thanks for sharing, and thanks for stopping for dinner and a few beers in Nebraska! It was a great time!

It does sound as if it was a great hunt. That is certainly attractive country. I note that your adventures turned your world topsy-turvy on a couple of occasions (at least the pictures would lead me to believe such to be the case). It's good to see you fellows back and posting again. Now, you'll just have to go tag a few deer to console yourselves.

Sorry to hear that Scotty. I had the feeling you would experience what the wolves had done to our once glorious elk hunting state but I hoped you wouldn't. You didn't spot any deer worth mentioning either?

Scotty sounds and looks like a great hunt even if the elk did not cooperate as one would have liked. Great pictures by the way. I wish I was better at taking pictures of my hunts.

Bill

Elk don't always come easy, that's for sure.

Thanks for the great photos of your hunt.

Scotty

Beautiful country. Glad you had a good safe hunt.
Thanks for sharing the pictures.

That is nice country over there, a lot like Washington around Lake Chelan, mountains and dead lodgepole pines. Three million acres of them in Washington. Looks as though the wolves have had their way with the elk. There used to be a lot of elk in the Salmon region.

Sorry that you guys got skunked, I had heard that Idaho was hit hard in some areas. Elk move a lot anyway and when there are fewer of them, it makes it really tough to find a shooter.

All this pillage of ruminents so a few city folk could hear a wolf, if they ever got out of the car?

Thanks Fella's! It was a great area. Should have held more elk than what we saw/observed. I am sure there are elk in the mountains somewhere, but I am not sure how long I would have had to stay to root them out. We traveled on the order of 6-10 miles per day into and out of some great country, and glassed non stop.

It was a great equipment check, as the gear we had, worked well, kept us dry and warm. Rifles and scopes help up well, except for a certain Zeiss (I will let Brian elaborate)..

I do LOVE that M70 Alaskan. Perfect rifle, for me that is. Weight seems about right for hiking in the mountains, 338 Win Mag is just about all I would ever need for elk in the high country, and the balance is very nice, even with a 25" barrel. The Minox 2-10 worked PERFECT guys. This scope was rained on NON stop, snowed on, left outdoors in the elements. I never once put it to my eye and had it fog or could not make out an animal. Pretty impressive. I am going to try and sneak to the range to see if retained zero after the hunt, but I am betting it is pretty close.

Scotty,

Great pics and story as usual!

That 338 looks great in the pics as well. Too bad the elk didn't cooperate with you this trip.

I second Mike's response about meeting you and Brian. It was great to sit down and talk with you three and share some drinks like old friends. You three are welcome at my house and table any time you travel through the area. Not many people can say they ate dinner sitting next to an elephant and giraffe mount!

Great pics Scotty, too bad about the wolves they are a real problem here too. That is some beautiful country you were in.

A few more pics of the hunting grounds or as I knew them " hiking grounds"

Great pictures, Brian. Idaho certainly has some lovely country. On the other hand, you didn't pass through an area that isn't gorgeous, given opportunity to find the beauty. The US is a delightful country.

I always liked carrying the Alaskan's that I owned whether .338 or .300 H&H, never owned the .375 Alaskan. They are just about the perfect weight to lug up and down western mountains without killing yourself and yet the recoil is still reasonable. Yours looks as though it got some mileage and weather while you were out here. Won't hurt it though, they were made to hunt with.

You were about 350 miles from where I live in Washington which is pretty close, considering. You guys drove some miles this year, as you also did last year in Oregon.

Beautiful trip, guys. Absolutely beautiful. Have to get out that way myself one of these years.

Scotty & Crew, thank you for the beautiful photographs & stories.
Being a born & raised prairie boy I always find hunting in the foothills & mountains very interesting.
I am sorry to hear that the wolves have really taken out the Elk population in that area.
Glad that you guys had a great time even though the Elk just weren't there.

Blessings,
Dan
