Well after 2 days of persuing the elusive wapati I found them. After many prayers and hiking I discovered them on the hillside and meadow across from my cabin (on private land of course) I watched 41 elk of all types come down to the river at dusk. A nice 6x6 herd bull a couple of rag hornes and several spikes. I froze my hands scanning them till dark at 125 yards or so. YUP Idaho has elk
Tomorrow is a new day!

Oh, yeah, elk will do such things. It is as if they taunt the earnest hunter by sashaying about on land where the erstwhile nimrod has no permission. They can be sneaky that way.

Hi Greg, thank you for the update. I sure hope those Elk give you a opportunity.
Look forward to more stories & photos :)

Blessings,
Dan

Greg,

Good luck buddy. I hope you can tag out on a big bull.

Elk definately have some sneaky tricks such as herds dancing freely in the meadows when I have only a deer tag. Or sashaying the fence line on private land!

Your doing all the right things and you'll get em Greg. Elk are far from dumb but they do make mistakes and it sounds like your in position when they do.

Wish I was there buddy! Next year, hell or hi water, I will be
Even if I am your gun barer!

Yeah, elk sure are smart. Somehow, the bulls will know if you have a cow tag, cows and branch bulls will know if you have a spike tag, and spikes and cows will know if you have a trophy bull tag, and will feel safe enough to frolic right in front of you!

I feel your pain...

Two seasons ago I spent an hour watching a HUGE bull from a quarter mile away, on public land. I was armed with my .300 WSM and 200 gr Accubonds.... Dang....

It was deer season, not elk season, and I didn't have a branch-antler permit anyway. Dang...
