Ideas for new chuck gun

You know I've stayed out of this fray, but hey guys what about a 6mm Remington? Fast, flat shooting, easy to load for, accurate, and the list just goes on and on!

Maybe a 6mm-06! Still think the old 25-06 has some serious potential too.

I agree with you guys completely on one thing is that Scotty is the biggest enabler I believe I have ever met! Scotty could completely convince the swamp selling real estate guy that he needs to purchase 200 more acres of prime mosquito infested muck! :p :p :p

In all fairness, my first wish was a 6mmBR or Dasher. They still look good to me!

The 6mm BR is a delightful cartridge, and they can be made to shoot far better than they should.

Man, I am going to need handrails installed on my backside to make it safe for all of you guys jumping on my back!

Nah, man, it's a compliment... your enthusiasm is contagious, and it rubs off on everyone around you.

Plus, it's not like anybody has to do any serious arm-twisting to get this group of derelicts to buy a new toy! (And yes, I'm pointing that one squarely at myself!)

I was looking on the Hart website today. Their caliber selection has a 6.5-284 and a 6.5x284 Norma. What's the difference?

SE,
I believe the 6.5-284 has a OAL of 2.80 and the Norma is used in long actions. If I'm wrong I'm sure that someone will educate us both!

Scott

That would be worth asking Hart for the placement. The 6.5-.284 Norma is the standardised version of the 6.5-.284. I can only surmise that the Norma has altered some dimension. I know that they maintained the shoulder angle, so that shouldn't be the source of the discrepancy. Scott may be correct as the OAL of the Norma cartridge is 2.70 inches.

I do know that a lot of shooters throat this round long to maximize case capacity. Those 6.5 bullets are long.

Scott

In the Nosler manual they have loads for the 6.5-284 Norma version with a max cartridge length of 3.310" They also mention the 6.5-284 Winchester is throated much shorter.

I already have a 6 mm REM in a Rem M700 Classic so it wouldn't be a "new" chuck gun to me - LOL so thats why the 240 BEE  has my interest - will also outperform  the 6mm Rem !
Cheers RJ :)

I have the 243 AI for a long range, low recoiling rifle. It shoots Amaxs over 3100 FPS and 70gr BTs to almost 3700 FPS.

I've read about this one a couple of times, but don't remember a detailed description of it. Specs? Did I miss a thread?

The Norma version is the commercialized version the other is a wildcat. If that's your choice go with the commercial, a 6-284 would be an awesome chuck gun too!

I have a 30" Bartlein 7.5" twist barrel on my .243AI and it shoots 105 Amax's over 3300fps. My light fireform load runs 3500fps with 60gr Sierra's and shoots under 1/2" for 5 shots. The 105 Amax load shoots right at 1/4". Both got a workout on chucks again this weekend again. I didn't go perfect this time but I got 9 and I'm blaming the misses on being sick.

I think i may have fallen for the 6.5-284. It just looks like it would fill all my needs for a long range chuck killer. The only downfall that I can find is barrel life. I thought that Desertfox had a 6.5-284, but i can't find the thread or pics. Anyone have them? Where you at DF?
Sorry SE. Have not followed this thread.

Actually I have the 6.5-284 Winchester throated for the 140 grain Berger VLD bullet. So technically, it's a Norma. The Norma has a slightly short body when compared to the Winchester Version but the case length is the same. The Norma also is throated to seat the longer VLD bullet further out and hence more powder capacity. If you go with the Norma route, you need the long action. You can use the short action but it will be a single shot proposition.

With that said, the 6.5-284 Norma will be a poor choice for a chuck gun. My rifle at almost 10 lbs. can be unpleasant to shoot with full power load. (140 grain Berger VLD at 2950 fps.). It is however deadly long-range deer rifle.

Never hunted chuck so I can not comment on what will be an ideal gun for them.

Thanks DF. I was wondering what the recoil was like. I probably wouldn't be shooting hundreds of rounds in one sitting like PD hunters do. Probably 20-30 in a day.

If it's only 20 to 30 shot in a span of several hours then that would not be a problem. Heck I can handle that even with my 300 Weatherby shooting the 180 grain pill. :)

How tough are those rock chuck by the way? I once read an article by Bob Hart in Precision Shooting Magazine hunting those chuck with 30 Hart I believe. He was sniping those Pennsylvanian chuck at extreme distances with 180 grain Ballistic Tip at over 3000 fps. Now that would be fun.

It is fun, although 150gr BT's at about 3600fps is even better. Chucks aren't tough but to get air out of big ones takes some big calibers and explosive bullets.

They aren't that tough, but It's fun to turn them inside out. I have more fun laying out in a field shooting chucks than just about anything else. My wife also loves to go with me. She glasses the field with my spotting scope and uses the rangefinder to give me distance. We have a great time together.

SE,

Sounds like a pleasant way to spend an afternoon. It strengthens the family ties, undoubtedly.
