OK but just writing what it is, will probably leed to spending money. I think i would take one of my rem short actions, rebarrel it with a match grade 20" in a very light conture. chambered in a 260. Then i would put it in a very light stock, put a great compact scope on it 2.5x8x38 vx3. work up a load with 120gr nosler ballistic tips. put a claw sling on it and pack this 6lb rifle with spring in my step.

They already made/make all 3 of mine, the problem is finding the other 2 I can afford. I lucked out finding a shilen barreled maser 98 in 280 rem for cheap at a gunshow, a local smith's half-finished project the buyer decided to back out on. Just added a Richards thumbhole stock with some purdy grain and a buehler style safety and voila... my first perfect rifle. It shoots good too.
The savage 99 in 358 win would do nicely for my close work and any bigger game I might hunt someday. Still looking for that one.
The 3rd will be a lightweight mauser 98 or 96 in 6.5 swede or 257 roberts with a splinter curly maple stock and a cute little 22" pencil barrel for when I don't feel like lugging the .280 around. Top the light gun with a 2X7 German zeiss with the 3A reticle, and the Burris 3X9 BDC that's already on my 280, maybe a Marbles tang sight on the M99 and We're cookin with gas!
All of the above should shoot to 1" or so with good handloads, I guess I'd give the savage a little wiggle room on that one. I'm not building a target rifle, so that'll do. No special lapping, blueprinting or Lilja barrels required, just a reasonable trigger pull and good bedding. I guess I'm lucky, my dream guns are all easily obtainable. Now if you start talking things I'd like to collect... Ever hear of an Stg 44?

Just sent you a PM asking you a question how your IMR 8208 and 100 e-tip combo worked.
So far I've been really focusing on the e-tips as I had purchased 600 of them. My CED M2 chron was not working for a couple of range sessions so some of my results are inconclusive.
Also, I didn't discover Nosler's suggested minimum seating depth of .05" until just yesterday and had started at .03". And, Nosler also suggests starting 2 gr under their listed max charges in the #6 Nosler manual. Actually popped a primer out with 49 gr of H4831sc and the e-tip as I was 3 gr over their max. OUCH!
This rifle shows ZERO pressure indicators until the primer popped. If I'd had my chrono running I might have see it coming with incrementally reduced increase in vel for each .5 gr increase of powder.
Have been using new WW-Super +P brass and either CCI200 or WLR primers.
This thing, having full wood to metal contact in the barrel channel, is very picky about heating up; only allowing me 3-shot groups. Fine by me. My testing temps have been 60 to 85 deg F, shooting in the am but having to quit by noon as I'm getting sun light bounce off the ground which screws up the vel readings.
I first started with the Sierra 100 sp and IMR 4350/CCI200. I stopped at 48 gr and had a 1.17" group. Not sure of vel.
I did load some IMR 8208, e-tips and CCI 200 running the Hodgdon wt range from 37.1 gr to 39.6 gr. My best groups was .97" (37.1), worst was 2.6" (38.6). 39.6 gr had a decent 1.45" group.
Then H4350, e-tips and CCI 200 shooting 4-shot groups as I was still trying the get the chrono working and I need 4-shots for a SD. I ran .5 increments from 39 to 41 gr. 40.5 looked promising with a .52" 3-shot group. The 4ths shot opened it up to 1.09" I ran some more groups with
40.3 and 40.6 gr and got 1" and .8" groups respectively. Then a friend was going to the range with his Oehler 35p chrono and graciously allowed me to shoot some 40.5 gr vel readings.
45 ES

2983 fps, 5-shots
3-shots into 1.08" and 5 into 3.13"
See, I told you. This rifle will not groups 4 or 5 shots.
At this point I decided to try some 100 gr TTSX. These little guys like to shoot!
I tried John Barsness' load of 100 gr TTSX and Ramshot Hunter; his charge being 47 gr. Again, CCI 200, .03" off lands. 44.5 gr to 47 gr gave consistent 1.25" to 1.5" groups. I was able to shoot 47 gr over the Oehler 35p and got the following. Oh yeah, I also did a primer test that day too. The WLR primer beat the other so I'll put down those numbers.

3 shots into .79"
5 shots into 2.16"
I then moved on to IMR 4350 and the 100 TTSX/CCI 200 combo; .030" off the lands. 43 to 45 gr range in .5 increments. Still no working chrono. Best was 43 gr for 1.48". 45 gr was worst with 2.43". Time to move on.
I was taking an interest in Hunter after my Oehler readings so I tried 43 to 46 gr with the e-tip and WLR primers. By now I had two new CED sensors and was getting some readings. But, I was getting high sun angle issues and actually backed my car upto the sensors and opened the trunk lid to provide shade on the ground to eliminate the sun's reflection off the ground. My old Oehler M33 never had this problem.
Anyway,
43 gr = no vel
43.5 gr = 3081 fps
44 gr = 3093 fps
44.5 = no vel
45 = no vel
45.5 = 3208 fps
46 = 3205 fps
I believe 45 gr is max in my rifle

34 to 36.5 gr wt range.
34 = 2808 fps (best group @ 1.38")
34.5 = 2841 fps
35 = 2864 fps
35.5 = 2905 fps
36 = 2969 fps
36.5 = 2966 fps
The remaining groups had nothing better than 2".
IMR 4350, e-tip, CCI 200
39.5 = 2919 fps (1.12" group)
40 = 2982 fps
40.5 = 3024 fps
41 = 3061 fps
41.5 = 3079 fps
42 = 3109 fps
The remaining groups had nothing better than 2.6".
Next is Varget which I test either later today or tomorrow am along with the IMR 8208 so that I can get some good vel readings.
Now, that I have a working chrono and understand more about the what to look for as far as trustworthy load data for the 257 Roberts, I should be able to stay out of the danger zone.
Oh, and I'll have a basically new CED M2 chrono up for sale come Oct when I get my new Oehler 35p.

You have an absolutely gorgeous rifle there! It is incredible to say the least. When I looked at those pictures, I thought I died and went to heaven!!! That .257 Roberts is quite a cartridge too!

I think something to plink with at long range.
So, it would start with a Stillers Viper SS or TAC action. Then add a Pac-Nor Super Match 7mm 1-9" Polygonal barrel, likely 28" maybe 30". Not sure what cartridge yet,,,,,
but would like enough capacity to drive the JLK 180 gr. around 3000 + fps, if not more.
Also haven't decided on the stock, but pretty sure it would have a Nightforce sitting on top when done.

I loved the model 70 ,257 Roberts. It is sooooooooo beautiful that I could not hunt with it.
I am a composite stock, bead blast, utilitarian kind of guy, function also makes things beautiful. The Remington that Guy has is my idea of the perfect hunting rifle. I thought the same thing the last time I saw it. In fact I have several similar to it. My perfect rifle is essentially that rifle in a 7mm mag size (long bullet lots of powder) that will let me shoot small groups at 300 yards. I have been striving to complete that goal for a couple of years now and may start over again this winter. We will see. :grin: :grin:

GSSP, you just posted my dream rifle. Everything up to the choice of chambering. The only thing I would change is the scope. I have one just for that rifle... an El Paso Weaver
