I'm having buyers remorse!

My method for avoiding the temptation of shooting the donor is to buy .270s instead of '06s.

Absolutely NO temptation THERE!

Agreed especially when your a member of the 280 cult that really kills any thought of owning or shooting a 270.

I actually DID shoot one of my .270 donors. That may have actually moved the project along more quickly.

I got a spare .270 barrel in the deal, I'm really tempted to put it on and leave the rifle. I love my .270's.

I had a .280 once couldn't tell the difference between it and the .270 when used on game. I like my .270 rifle better so my BIL got the .280. The BIL sold his .30-06 in favor of the .280 though.

Watching you get ready to build this gun is interesting as it reminds me of buying an pre64 model 70 back in the late 80's just to build a 35 Whelen up with and it sit around in the corner for about two years and I never did get to it and wound up selling it to a guide for just what I had payed for it back in those days [$225] . Always wished I had compleated that project and migrated off to the .338WM in a factory gun; but was always thinging about the project . Never did get one done, but if I were to build one today, I would take the same path you are on and probably build a .338/06, just because of all the bullets that are always going to be available for that caliber. I shot the 210 Nosler PT, for over twenty years with my WM, and it worked flawlessly and was never any question about who had the authority with anything.
The 338/06 is so darn close to the same thing, it will make you a spectacular rifle, for any game on the North American Continent!
Keep us all posted and pictures and the very best of luck to you with the project! 8)

I've had a safe full of donors that never materialized into completed rifles, that got sold off as well. Several VZ-24's, one small ring 98 rifle, three or four small ring 93-96 mausers, and 1917 action that sat around a year or two and got sent down the road for someone else to dream about. Right now I'm trying to decide if I want to build two rifles or one. I've got my original donor M670 and this M70 Classic. I could build a FWT .270 Win on the M670 and my .338-06 on the classic, and throw in my M70 XTR .375 Ruger I could sell off all the rest of my big game rifles and use the money to hunt anything in the world.

I sure would miss all those other rifles though, even if I don't hunt with most of them I do enjoy shooting all of them.

I hear ya on all that. Actually I just gave away a nice old 98 Mouser that already had a Douglas Barrel drawn up on it in .22 cal that had an old Fajen stock with darn nice fiddleback in it AWAY!
A couple of weeks ago to an old friend that thinks he wants to dive into a project. The bolt and floorplate were missing and the stock was just roughed in but it was well on its way but I decided with all the projects I have on the slate at the moment I was never going to get there . I do have one more project in me though and that is to save enough money to buy one of those dam Kimbers in wood and blue so I can keep up with Scotty!
