I ran across a Mauser m48 sported on 24 hour campfire and just couldn't pass it up. It's the stock that sold me on it. Not only looks like a good stick of wood but it also just looks comfortable. It has both standard and scout mount on it. I'm not sure what direction I'll go with on it. I imagine at some point I'll probably rebarrel it and definitely will want to put a low mount safety on it, probably a wisner two position.

I'm afraid this gun bug is just incurable!

8x57 18" barrel according to the listing. It's not a bad round but will probably twist on a new tube at some point. No idea what I would go with, something intermediate length to fill the magazine length 3.25"

You're right - it's really not a bad round, and Nosler makes some good 8mm bullets.

Hmmm... I'd shoot it and see how it does...

Can't be much wrong with an 8mm, 200 grain Partition...

Cool rifle and I'm with Guy, today's powder and bullets make the 8x57 look pretty good.

A 200gr bullet at 2600-2700fps would sure make an impression on just about anything you threw one at. I loaded the Speer 200gr hot-core @ 2500fps for my SIL and still have the dies and some brass.

Great find! Congratulations. I really like the 8X57; it is a woefully underrated cartridge that'll serve you well. As others have suggested, I'd be inclined to shoot the rifle and make a sober assessment before I did any changing. I am a patsy for nice wood. Yeah, I would have found it hard to resist such a find.

I've seen a few this winter either in the mauser action or an 03A3 action. I want one bad. All three that I've seen were about $300 with an ok Fajen stock on them, similar in shape to the one you have, but not as nice a wood. If you have trouble finding 8x57 brass, you can always rechamber as an 8mm-06. 8mm-06 is a slightly hotter load too. Pretty sure I just saw it in the new Nosler 8 manual. Good luck with it.

Nice rifle. The 8mm Mauser should do just fine with a 200 gr PT.

I picked up a leupold 2.5x scout and a low set of rings tonight. Got it all mounted up and will shoot it tomorrow. I think I will ultimately send it and my other scout scope back to leupold to get a reticle swap for the #1 German post. Until then I would like to get it out and shoot it a few times and see if it's going to be a shooter or need a barrel swap.

It does look sharp. Very handy, and especially in the bush I should imagine.

I'm a sucker for anything you can load with stripper clips! It is quite handsome, hope it shoots

That's a beautiful set up Bear. I dig it.

Post up up your targets. Your idea on the German #1 sounds pretty cool as well. I like that little 8x57. Neat cartridge with a lot of capability today.

Took it to the range today. It shot great with some cheap PPU match 200gr ammo. It's pretty hot ammo 200gr match bullet at 2425fps.A couple of really good three shot groups but s general average of just over an inch. I got it zeroed to be 3" high at 100 yards and hitting just about on at 200 yards. Running a 3.5-3.75" group at 200 yards.

I put a handful of clay pigeons on the 100 yard berm, actually closer to 125 yards. I preceded to 4 for 5 on my first stripper clip full. For some reason I find scout setups extremely easy to shoot offhand. It's just a steadier platform for offhand shooting.

Tried a hunting load in the Mauser scout today. 195gr hornady interlock in front of a slightly above book max load of IMR 4895 in PPU brass. Clocking right at 2468fps even in that short 18" barrel. Should make for a decent hunting load. Shoots pretty good too considering, sighted 2" high at 100 it drops about 1.5-1.75" at 200 yards. Shot this five shot group at 200 yards to confirm drop. Just over 2" across, not too shabby for a heavy Mauser trigger and low magnification.

Finished out my range session with some offhand practice shooting clays on the 100-200 yard berms. For some reason scouts shoot great offhand. Easily my favorite for offhand shooting.
