Info on Nosler 6.5mm BTs

I picked up some 100BTs today on a trip to Calgary so now need a place to start my load any suggestions on powders with H on them.
Foregot 260 Rem.
Thanks Alan.

To answer to the toughness of the 100g 6.5mm Ballistic tip: I smacked the biggest wild hog boar of my life 265lbs with one in the "armor." The little pill went on to kill him in--he took less than 10 steps. This was a 6.5 Sweed at 20 yards doing roughly 3000 FPS. It didn't exit and made mincemeat of his lungs.

I wouldn't pick that load for big hogs, but it is what I had at the time and it did fine. I suspect it would do great on any deer.

I do have issues with the 120 BTip though. They don't shoot well in my gun. I've shot hundreds of them trying to get the accuracy this gun is capable of. It shoots them quirky-such as three in less than 1/3MOA and two flyers. Just to prove to myself that it wasn't the shooter or gun I loaded the same load with Sierra MatchKings 120g's and shot a 3/4MOA 5 shot group. This 5 shot group with these flyers normally goes 1.5MOA which just isn't good enough to make me happy.

The gun loves the 100g Btips, (oddly enough with a 1:8" twist). I know what I'm doing on all aspects of handloading and just can't figure out why this one bullet is a problem sometimes and sometimes does great--same day, same loads, same variables.

Does anyone else see irregular performance from them?

Have yet to try any 4350 out of mine.
I've worked up loads to try this weekend with
RL-19
H380
748
Ya, drastic spread on powders, but hope to see the RL-19 work the best.

My 7-08 loves 4350 however and 120grn B-tips......just the big-brother.

Powerstroke,

Let us know how your load development goes.
I would think RL19 would give you decent velocity.

RL-15 rocks in it. That is what I used. I got 3300 fps from 100 gr Partition. Who needs a 25-06?

Yeah !

I owned a browning composite stalker for about a day or so!

Ok,
You guys are going to make me go buy a chrony huh....

I've reloaded for years without one, but really starting to see the importance of one.
Took the Wife's .260 with us camping this weekend with several different loads hoping for some "quality" shooting time.
This would be the first time out with the newly finished and re-worked stock. ( first bedding job I've done )
It seemed to have worked.....I sighted it in with Factory Ammo 5/8 in @ 100 off the bi-pod. ( previous condition was as it warmed up, point of impact would start moving left "FAR LEFT" )
The Wife seemed to think it was more fun picking out rocks on the hill-side and shooting them with the rounds I had worked up. ( Oh well, I'll make it to the range one of these days to see which worked better ).

There was a noticable difference in powders however. The 4350 had a deep boom to it, and threw fire out the barrel several "feet"
The RL-19 had a sharp crack to it without much out the end of the barrel. I'm hoping the RL-19 works good......

Just now seen this thread.

I've had great results from the 260 Rem using H-4350 (actually, my rifle is a 260 AI). Using the 100g Partition and 50.0g of H-4350 I get 3,340 fps from a 24" barrel. I since shortened the barrel on my rifle to 22" and the velocity on that load dropped to 3,285 fps. Considerable velocity loss but still very accurate. The same laod is very accurate with the 95g V-Max so I'm guessing it would shoot well with the 100g BT.

FYI, the Nosler manual shows the highest velocity with 100g bullets using H-414 (which is the same thing as WW-760).

I loaded up the 120g BT last year for deer hunting.....and the only thing I shot was a bobcat. Wish I could tell you how it worked on deer but can't. I used a very accurate load using Hunter. Unfortunately, I used a Fed 210M primer when working up that load and the only accurate load was around 2,825 fps. I need to reshoot that series with a Fed 215M primer and see if anything changes. Alternately, I could just use H-4350 as it shoots great with the 120g Pro Hunter and the accurate load was at 2,955 fps from the 22" barrel. Most of my shots are under 50 yds so the higher velocity really isn't needed.

Sure hope Nosler comes out with a 110g E-Tip!!! A 110g E-Tip for the 260 Rem would be awesome!

BTW, this is hearsay but I've read on another forum that the 6.5 100g BT is a drop-deer-in-their-tracks killing machine.......for what it's worth.

Thanks HogWild working on 100grBT's with H4350 hope to try them this weekend. I think a 110gr E-tip would be grate or an AccuBond for now.
Thanks Alan.

Got fall caught up so did some more loading and came up with a white tail load 100gr BTs with 48.5gr H4350 and no pressure signs 1/2 inch 3 shot group at 100 yds. that is good shooting for me a lefty shooting right handed so I'm vary happy. POP can you punch the numbers for me to get estimate on speed 24inch barrel. Thanks .

Alan

Not a 260Rem, but in my CZ550FS in 6.5x55 I use 100gr. BT with Varget powder and run them at 3050fps. out of that little carbine. Never worked the load to max...all I wanted was 3000fps and accurate.
This morning, I dropped a doe at 299yds...punched through both lungs and exited. That is my third deer with the load, previous two were at 120yds and 270yds. Wound channels have been identical no matter the range. I think my Accubonds will stay on the shelf for another year....

Jim
