Interesting 280 Rem article

I have a soft spot for the .280 since it was the caliber that got me into reloading in 1983. I had researched the caliber and finally found a Ruger 77 in .280 (wish I still had that old tang safety rifle). The only loaded ammo I could find for it was 165 grain Cor-lok junk that was really slow. The rest is history, as it pulled me into a sickness that I hope I never loose. I doubt I will ever own another .280, but it is a great all-around caliber for hunting most NA game.

My two Rem 700s are: 280 and 35 Whelen

Great pairing. Thought Gerry would appreciate it

That is a cool article and some GREAT load posted for the 280. I would love to find a Model 70 280 in the future. It has to be one of the better balanced cartridges out there. Mild recoil and excellent ballistics.

I am still sour when I think of the M700 Mountain Rifle my cousin picked up before I could put my hands on it! That rifle shot really well, right from the get go. It had a 3x9 Leupold Compact on it and was about 550.00.. I almost shed a tear over that rifle.. He won't give it up though, I've tried.

The 280 has always impressed me, I think if I ever built a true sporting rifle the 280 ackley would be at the top of the consideration list.

Jeff, I would love to see your "true sporting rifle"!!! I am pretty sure it would be a head turner..

Hey Scotty, check your email. I'm gonna get you in trouble eventually!

You would have me in hot water, but I am on a hiatus for awhile. With that 338 Win Mag in the safe and hunting on the horizon, I am in no fear of breaking on this one, no matter how awesome it is.

Barsness is probably my favorite living gun-writer. He hits it from both the technical/handloader side and also from the hunter's view. I like that.

I think it was Finn Aagaard, many years ago, who educated me about the virtues of the .280 Rem. Oddly enough, I've never owned one despite being quite impressed with it, and with the .280 AI version as well.

The old .30-06 case has a lot going for it, spawning truly excellent cartridges like the .280 & .35 Whelen.

He is getting near the top for me as well, the more I read, the more I like of him.

Scott i think it would look similar to the 308 Baer I had, bat receiver bartlein. barrel jewel trigger and a McMillan. spotter stock. scope? Maybe a 3-15 premier light tactical. I have a couple things to build first but maybe down the road ?

I enjoy reading John Barsness as well whether it's a paid article or when he posts at 24hourcampfire just because he wants to. I have always wanted a 280 but could never make it happen, so it looks like a choice between it and the 7x64. At least they have pretty much the same ballistics :)

You should make that your new signature line :)

Saving the world! One .280 Rem/AI or 7mm Rem Mag at a time.

Now, I'm certain I've heard something similar before. Where was that? :?

I really like JB. I usually find fault with just about every other gunwriter, but I'll always read Barsness' stuff.

Initially a very underrated cartridge due to it being housed in the Rem 742.
Big green has a tendency of doing this with some rounds. 6mm Rem comes to mind. Took a while but people are starting to appreciate what this round can do at 64000 PSI.
