Did Winchester ever make a left-handed version of the Model 70 rifle? If so, what years and where would a person find one?

Yes, the Model 70 was sold in a left-hand version. I can't tell you when they were first introduced, but they were still being produced in the middle of the last decade.

I know they made them when they made rifles in New Haven, CT as I have a left hand .338 Win Mag that I love.

I'd check gunbroker. There ain't many floating around and those that are available are expensive.

That's true.
For some reason the nearest Cabela's had mine at a very good price. I knew it was a deal so I bought it right then and there.

Up here in Canada you do not see many left handed model 70s:( and when you do they are like gold.
I purchased my first model 70 this fall for my son in a 270wsm we have not had a chance to work with it yet as I am still in recovery mode.

Blessings,
Dan

Yes, they did and I've got seven of them.

I bought my first one (a .375H&H) in late 1996 when they first came out.

You might find one on Gunbroker from time to time.

George

George that is great that you have 7 left handed model 70s. A few photos with calibres would be a treat to us fellow lefties .

Blessings,
Dan

I'd have to move a bunch of guns around to get them all out of the safe, but Fotis has seen most of them.

I've got a stainless Classic in .270, a 7mmSTW Custom Sporting Sharpshooter (built by H-S Precision for the Winchester Custom Shop), blue Classics in .300 Win. Mag. and .338 Win. Mag., a Safari Express in .375H&H, a Classic rebarreled to .458AccRel, and a Super Express in .470 Capstick (which is in my signature photo).

An embarassment of riches, to be sure.

George

That is a great assemblage of cartridge in a classic rifle, George. Congratulations.

If you can get one for a reasonable price then go for it the problem is a lot of the time the prices are outrageous for what you actually get. A good Ruger 77 MK II or Hawkeye or a Montana 1999 are great options in something similar plus they actually support us lefties unlike Winchester.

True.
My 30-06 is a lefty and it's a Ruger.

The only one I have ever seen belongs to an old hunting partner of my fathers.

He had it re-barreled to 300 Roy several years ago and loves it. Though now he is considering a .26 Nosler barrel...you know when the Roy starts getting washed out.

They did make a few that I have heard of...Ruger, Savage, and Browning are making some good southpaw rifles these days but once you get bitten by the Model 70 bug, none other will do.

For the sake of discussion, if I were to stumble on a left-handed M70 in a caliber other than what I desired, could I get it rebarreled for another caliber? I assume I would be limited to a caliber that would match the bolt. Or, are there "replacement" bolts available for any caliber I wanted?

Bolt face would be the determining factor in choosing a new chambering for a Model 70. I rechambered a 30-06 to a 9.3X64, another 30-06 to a .284 Win, and I am in the process of rechambering yet another 30-06 to an 8X68S. The bolt face may need to be relieved in some instances, but it determines the maximum you can use.

Montana Rifle Company is making some nice LH'ed rifles. I'd say they have the spirit of Winchester in them.

I love the Model 70 but being a left handed shooter I went to Ruger, Savage, and soon, Nosler for my rifle fix with one Model 70 exception.
I'd look real hard at the Montana action if it were me and look at a custom build. The only reason I didn't do that, and ordered the Nosler, is because I liked what I saw when I played with the Nosler 48.
