Lets talk 7 mags

And while I am looking for another 7mmRemMag (since I have dies, brass, and bullets on the bench and no rifle to use them with) I actually think the 7mmWSM is the best 7Mag in terms of "bang for the buck" so to speak. One day I'm going to build a long range powerline rifle in 7mmWSM.

The 7WSM has certainly opened my eyes a bunch. To be honest, I wished I had more time with it. It is about as versatile as a hunting cartridge gets. Between it and my 270WSM, they are my picks for just all around great hunting rounds. I have a ton of overlap being that I have the 264, 270 and 7's, but I wouldn't give any of them up. They are much to cool and just plain perform. Scotty

With that in mind maybe a Browning X Bolt in 7mm WSM or 280 might be good.

Gerry, that Browning in a left hander would be a sweet rifle. I am seriously thinking my son will get my 7WSM when he is ready. Heck, I would get him another M70 if that is what he decides on. I really like mine and hope to do some hunting with it this year. Scotty

You are right a 30-06 is great too I sold my last one in the winter to get some money so my wife and I could get married and go on a honeymoon (we've been married 7 1/2 months now) knowing that a gun or two could be added later. The problem is like most guys on here I really like a lot of different guns and calibers if money were no object I would have a pile more of them :)

Man, that is the eternal problem! I want all of them. Heck, Brian is the worst enabler on the Eastern Seaboard! Always putting cool stuff in front of my eyes! Scotty

Glad you said Easter seaboard... Between DocMike, Fotis and I, I think we have the West covered!

I'm a fan of the 7RM because... 1- It's stood the test of time as being one of the most popular hunting cartridges ever created. 2- It's capable of taking any NA game. 3- It kicks 2/3 that of the 300's. 4- It's been proven to possess the accuracy necessary for 1000 yard competitive shooting. 5- Many excellent bullets are available in 7mm. 6- It's easy to resell. I want to come down on Sunday if you can swing it? Scotty

You all are huge enablers with Mike being the biggest enabler via the Western hunters. Scotty

Reviving a 4 year old thread it's kind of funny after reading my original post how ideas eventually come to pass. Tried the 358 Norma mentioned and ended up trading away the 375 Ruger.

A couple of months ago when Mike, Dan and I got together for a great hunt (even though sleep was in short supply  ) I ended up having Corlane's put on a near new 7mm Rem Mag barrel on my old Sako, 1/2 hr time and $50 later I was out the door with a 7mm Rem Mag. Also bought some 150 gr Ballistic Tips and Partitions, 154 gr Hornady Spire Points, IMR 4451 and IMR 7977. Have only been able to shoot it once so far but Hodgdon's max loads with both powders and the 154 gr Hornady both gave groups of around 1" at 100 yards. Not a bad start and I'm sure some excellent loads will be found easily. Didn't have time to chronograph but Hodgdon says speed for both should be around 3040 fps.

Was thinking about a 175 gr ELD-X combined with the 175 gr Partition but after seeing the picture of Bill's recovered 160 gr AccuBond has me thinking about it as well. For the time being I would like to try the 150's and 154 mentioned earlier but am planning to switch to a bit heavier bullet.

What are your thoughts? Game will be elk and moose in more open country.

The 7mm Rem mag is a well-respected classic and I would hunt with one again in a heartbeat. Maybe a half a heartbeat.

I truly believe that a 160 gr 7mm bullet will take care of most "big game" hunting on this continent, and perhaps the world.

For my big bull elk back in 2000, I used the 175 gr Nosler Partition. And decided it was one heck of a bullet, but I suspect I'd have had the same results (dead bull within a few yards) if I'd used a good 160 gr bullet.

Regards, Guy

I am with Guy, the 7 mm is a fine cartridge and will do a great job on game. I have seen both deer and elk taken with my rifle, mostly with the 160 gr Partition. I chose the AB because of seeing the great results from others here, and the better BC the AB offers. I don't think you can go wrong with a 7 mag.

I used 175 grain TBBC and 175 grain PT in years past in my 7RM. More recently, I've used the 160 grain FS (of which I still have an abundance). Truthfully, a 160 grain PT or 160 grain AB is just about right for that cartridge. It will get the job done, doing the work with aplomb.

gerry I am sure you would like the 160gr. AB the load I use is 60.0grs. of IMR4350 & 215M primers. I have tested speeds with my Chrono & they are right around 3050fps in both the rifles. Accuracy is sub .75 :).
Good luck & I am sure looking forward to your reports on the load development.

Blessings,
Dan

Jerry
I forgot, my most accurate load is 61 grs of H-4350 with a CCI mag primer, RP case and i am using factory AOL. Shoots under MOA!

A little surprised at IMR 4350 and H 4350 being mentioned, I guess it shows how versatile those powders are. You guys are causing me to look more closely at the 160 gr AccuBond when my 150's are gone, they seem to be an ideal choice for a 7mm Rem Mag.

Sorry gerry I forgot to ask what did you put on it for glass?

Blessings,
Dan

Not in the same class of scopes you are used to now  it has a Burris FF II 2-7x35 with the Ballistic Plex. Not a fancy scope but it does the job fine.........

You're young and your eyes are still good, the 7 power max on the scope will be sufficient. For longer shots, my aging eyes appreciate more magnification. The Burris will serve you well.

After seeing how well the 160 AB worked in the Mashburn I have very little desire to try much else.

With all this 7RM talk it makes me anxious to get mine done so I can shoot it. I'm in DrMikes class with the aging eyes, it's going to get a Zeiss Conquest 4.5-14X44 MC SF on it and I'm going to install the scope today and order the stock from Body's, their platinum model laminated tawny brown with skip line checkering. Thought I'd do it up right since this might be the last one I build.
