Can anyone tell me the difference between normal and long range mounts. Am I correct in presuming that the rear base is higher in the long range version.

Secondly should there be any difference between a Burris and a Leupold base for a Rem 700. Both are supposed to be standard

Most long-range mounts are one-piece. The two best on the market, in my humble opinion... are the base and ring setups by Badger Ordnance and Seekins Precision. I've worked with both, and a few others, and these two are The Stuff. Yes, they are "canted" a bit - usually 20 MOA up. That gives most rifles the ability to hit at 1000 yards, and still have a zero at 100 yards. Nice...

I'll post a couple of photos.

Glen Seekins is a friend of mine - so I'm admittedly biased - but his base and rings are excellent! http://www.seekinsprecision.com

Either one is a great setup. Strong, and plenty of elevation to get even a .308 Winchester to 1000 yards, no problem.

The Leupold STD mount is also avail in a long-range version - and is much less expensive than either of the above options. Yes - it works too - rather well actually.
