Anyone have a load for 270WSM with R-17 and 140 AB? will be shot out of a Tikka T-3 if that matters. Thanks Mark.

I haven't used the 140 AB with my 270 WSM; it works so well on moose and elk with the 130 grain E-Tip and R17 that I haven't had to use anything else. However, here is a QL projection:

Code:
Cartridge : .270 WSM
Bullet : .277, 140, Nosler AccuBond 54765
Useable Case Capaci: 71.442 grain H2O = 4.639 cm³
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 2.860 inch = 72.64 mm
Barrel Length : 24.0 inch = 609.6 mm
Powder : Alliant Reloder-17

Predicted data by increasing and decreasing the given charge,
incremented in steps of 2.0% of nominal charge.

I took another look at my notes and see that I've used quite a bit of H1000 and 140 grain Partitions in the past with excellent velocity and accuracy.

Dr. this gun has never shot well with factory ammo, AB's or Barnes, my next step after the hand loaded AB's will be trying 140 partitions so I will keep the H1000 in mind, will that also work for a 180 in my other sons 300wsm? thank you

H1000 would be too slow for your son's 300 WSM. A better choice for both rifles would be something with a burn rate near one of the 4350s. RL19 is one that immediately suggests itself to me; it has served me well in both cartridges.

Sample Projections with RL19:

Code:
Cartridge : .300 WSM (CIP)
Bullet : .308, 180, Nosler PART SP 16331
Useable Case Capaci: 72.076 grain H2O = 4.680 cm³

I can get just about any powder except RL-19 around here, I'm going to Eastern Wash. this weekend so I'll stop in a couple places and see if I can find some. One thing I do notice is the difference between QL and the Nosler reloading manual, I'm guessing Nosler is being overly cautious.

Nosler is presenting pressure tested loads. They are not being overly cautious; they are being precise. QuickLoad is a great estimate of what one can expect. Remember that data varies depending on variables such as burn rates, chamber dimensions, etc. Just remember to work up safely, watching for pressure signs.

I run RL17 in my WSMs and the QL is right there for the 140AB. Work up to the max. Pressure signs will come quick.

I got pretty good accuracy with a mild load of 59.0 gr of RE-17 behind a 130 gr AccuBond. My son used it to good effect on a nice 3 point mule deer this past season. It was mild, chronographing right around 3000 fps, IIRC. Decent accuracy. I would probably try something slower if I wanted more velocity, particularly with a 140 or 150 gr bullet. Reloder 22, 25 or MagPro would be the first I would try. If you want accuracy, you might give the Reloder 17 a go, I just think the slower burners might also provide similar accuracy with a 100 to 150 fps gain in velocity at max loads.

If you have any magpro available it is most definitely worth trying. I have had my best velocity and accuracy in my 270wsm with magpro. May not be the case in all rifles but out several rifles I have used it in the closer to max you run it the better it gets.

...since you have RL-17, I'd start w/ that, working up to 66grs. (near max.) w/ the 180's. I've gotten very good accuracy & MV's w/ a number of different 180gr. bullets, no problems w/ "temp. sensitivity", & personally, I think the RL-17's fast peak/ burn profile produces less "felt recoil" than comparable loads w/ slower powders...

Magpro and RL22 are your friends when it comes to the 270WSM and 140gr Accubonds. There are so many powders that will work well, but these two have been the outstanding performers for me in several 270WSM rifles. RL17, RL19 and AA4831 are my preverence with 130gr bullets.
